It could have been in the pipeline after Canelo, but Martinez blew it against Cotto.

 

Martinez called him out in 2011/12 which is when they could have fought.
They could have fought at 154 in 2011 or 2012 but Floyd never take those type of risks.
He preferred to sucker punch Ortiz instead.

 

Marination. It would’ve made more sense after Floyd beat Cotto and Canelo at 154. Lol at Ortiz getting knocked out.

 

Martinez wins.

Floyd didn't retire "just" while Williams had a fight lined up. He left whole of boxing when his division was seen as one of the best in boxing at the time.

Point is, he left to allow those other guys to soften each other up. Had he not "retired", he'd have to have fought Cotto or even Williams at 147 at some point. Williams was moving around 147 to 160 at the time.

Did guys lose? Of course. Did Floyd return right after they lost? Nope, never suggested that was a possibility.

 

It was not. Floyd left boxing when he has a big list of legitimate challenges at 147. He wanted them to soften each other up first.

 

147 is typically the deepest division in boxing. A zero title defense Williams and Miguel Cotto didn’t exactly make 147 strong in a historical sense. Todays division is better.

Everyone called him out back then. Need to take a number. And why does it even matter??.Floyd gets almost zero credit today for beating Canelo just like he gets zero credit today for beating Pac, or Cotto (all three of those guys went on to win championships after losing to Floyd, so don't fall for the narrative that they were old or shot)....
So with casuals like that making the demands now, what's even the point of answering people's call outs?

Nor would he fight pre 2010 Pacquiao
Nor would he fight Amir Khan
Nor would he fight Margarito

It's getting more and more obvious you weren't watching boxing back then. Just trying to play catch up is what you are doing....

 

He was p4p #3 back then. Of course it matters. Not as big as Pac foght of course but still a huge risk.
He does get a lot pf credit for schooling Canelo but it was a drained green version though.
Honestly the last time Floyd took a risk was when he fought Oscar. Cause he needed to. After that its been vacations and extremely carefull matchmaking.

But the hustle worked. He got rich and has a good record and no losses. So good for him not facing a risky guy like Martinez back then. Could have derailed the whole thing.
