Alan Minter defeated champion Vito Antuofermo by a split decision to win the World Middleweight Title in 15 rounds on March 16 1980 after challenger Marvelous Marvin Hagler struggled to fight a 15 round draw with champion Antuofermo on Nov 30 1979. Minter had a very accurate right jab that kept his opponents off balance and at bay. Gennady Golovkin although a dynamite hitter had trouble with boxers as evidenced against challenger Kell Brook on Sept 10 2016, the title bout was stopped by Brook's trainer in round 5 to protect Brook's damaged fractured orbital bone around his right eye, but Brook made it tough as he boxed. the flaw with Minter is that he had scar tissue above his eyes that could easily open up when hit solidly. I think that Minter boxes effectively in the early rounds as he did against Antuofermo but eventually gets worn down by GGG. Minter gets stopped on cuts around round 10 after some heavy resistance by Alan.

Good post, mate. I actually think that Alan gets stopped quite early on.
More than likely on cuts knowing Minter s misfortune.

Probably very entertaining, competitive and violent while it lasts. Minter liked a ruck and had an excellent chin as well as a good punch. If Golovkin didn't cut him up him I'd expect him to win a grueler on points probably.

I'd be curious to see Minters approach actually. He was generally good at pushing aggressive fighters backwards with his strength, work rate and awkward straight punching. Golovkin was better imo coming forward than being driven backwards, so I could see him being troubled and pushed hard. It's risky though because Minter wasn't especially quick or hard to hit. A bit straight up without great defensive reflexes, which would probably be his undoing in the end.

    Hi Buddy.
A very good, detailed, and precise insight into how this fight might pan out, for me Minter would be the architect of his own defeat, as you quite rightly state, Minter liked nothing better than a tear up, he would properly box within himself early on, catching G with that solid accurate jab of his, bringing the heavy hurtful left hand into play when G was off balance, BUT at some stage G would tag him, and that would spur Minter into a rumble, where he would undoubtedly come out second, as to when the fight ends, or how long it last, depends on the above scenario, best guess would be rounds 8 to 12, with ref wrapping his arms around a bloody but unbowed Minter.
    stay safe guys.

Minter looks like a pretty useful boxer. Nice handspeed and I agree that he has a quick and snappy jab. He also flurried pretty well on occasion against Hagler. I like a busy fighter. What I don't like is his very static head and the ease that he could get caught. Hagler did something that GGG also does, which is moved back on his feet when Minter tried to unload, and Minter couldn't really adjust to that. I fancy Minter might do fairly well until Golovkin downloaded his information and timed him. Not to denigrate Minter, but he looks a few levels down from Golovkin when it comes to physique and punching power. I don't think he's got the durability to win this.

GGG wasn't exactly known for being off balance. His specialty was parrying the jab and countering with his own jab.

I think Minter's face doesn't hold up and he gets stopped on cuts TBH

    Hi Buddy.
Of course your are right in your assertion GGG was indeed adroit at parrying his opponent's jab, and then executing his own, my thought process was more along the lines of, occasionally Minters very solid jab, would possibly knock GGG off balance, and should that arise Minter would make capital, and hopefully the follow up left would connect, keeping GGG honest, do I see that happening a lot, no !
Nice to chat, stay safe matey.

Richard, it was Frank Bruno vs Holmes, now you want Minter against a guy who can punch like Golovkin, Minter got stopped on cuts by light hitting Ronnie Harris! Minter is going to bleed so bad they better hold the fight in a blood bank!

Good call. Ronnie Harris was the fighter that lost on points to Hugo Corro in August 1978 when Corro was the champion.

If Minter is really at it and gives full concentration, then for 4 or 5 rounds I think this is a good match.
However although Minter possessed decent power GGG with his rock solid chin is not going to be discouraged from coming forward and applying that steady pressure which eventually breaks Minter down.
It could be a cuts stoppage but Minter may just be taking too much of a battering and he’s stopped inside 10 rounds.

Remember the first Vito Antuofermo title bout in March 1980, Minter outboxed him.
