I think these guys gotta want to fight Wilder, outside of Fury and maybe Ruiz it’s not 1 heavyweight that is raising there hand, every time AJ and his team talk they say he need 2/3 more fights and been saying it for years, Usyk said he was gonna be at Wilder last fight but never showed up and hasn’t said his name since. WBA mando isn’t due yet he doesn’t have to fight Dubois and Wilder is #1 in WBA.. these guys gotta want to fight

I was looking forward to Wilder-Ruiz. Would have been a good measure of how good each fighter is right now. Even though I think Wilder would have won quite easily. What was the reason it fell through? Split?

Wilder is one of the most enigmatic fighters of all time.
He does what he does extremely well, but looks very flawed in all other departments. But his power is so great that he’s almost competing in a different way to all other trad boxers.

We don’t really know how good he is to be honest. He has only fought 1 world class fighter in Fury, and as entertaining as those fights undoubtedly were, probably only won a small handful of rounds. But his power had him a hair away from winning, despite being horribly outclassed.

Ortiz is the only other name on his resume, and he is similarly hard to define. Went life and death with Charles Martin. Lost to Ruiz. But even he was having his way with Wilder before the inevitable.

The rest of Wilders resume is poor for such a decorated fighter - shamefully so (referring to the WBC champion status and lack of real competition).

The sad thing is, if only they would make the fights, we could find out. If he were to do the same to all the other top guys as he did vs Ortiz he would’ve been something of a revelatory boxer, in that he rendered classic technique moot. If he were to have lost a bunch, he would’ve been exposed as one dimensional.
But there is a yawning gap between those two parameters, and it’s crazy that we have no real clue where he falls on that scale.

I personally LOVE watching him fight for the above reasons, and this is why I’m so frustrated that we don’t see him in any decent matches outside the Fury trilogy.

I also find it odd how he seems to be held to a different metric than other *champions*.

For example - Fury was called a feather duster, but he KO’s Wilder and all of a sudden he’s a puncher and Wilders chin goes up in everyone’s estimation.

Fury’s post retirement resume is basically built around fighting Wilder 3 times, even though we don’t know his level ultimately. Aside from that he has been engaging in thoroughly unnecessary rematches with washed fighters like Chisora, and fighting Whyte who is universally derided by people when it fits their agenda.
Fury is seen as the best HW on the planet and a LOT of that is based off of beating Wilder 3 times.

He hasn’t (or hadn’t…) caught as much flack, or seen his reputation suffer, for fighting mostly much lower grade opposition than his rival, Anthony Joshua (who, succesful or not fought all comers).

it’s a fascinating dichotomy - and so much of it boils down to the Wilder enigma.

it would be such a shame for as fascinating a HW as Wilder to not be thrown into the mix with the myriad intriguing fights that there are out there for him.

I don't think he will. He'll chase Fury forever. He's like a villain who thinks everything would be perfect except for _______ and ruins his life trying to get it. He was trying to Spence-Crawford the HW division with Joshua, but Fury ruined it, and Wilder can't let go. He certainly doesn't want to risk losing to someone else.

Ruiz is a very talented fighter who has never been blown out by anyone. I give him a fair chance at beating Wilder.

Not desperate, a bit curious. That's the big question around him - does he have the necessary to trouble top fighters. And he's running out of time.

I think people just struggle with the idea Wilder is dangerous to anyone. Big punching and timing and a fighting instinct trump skills most of the time probably. He's just an example of it. And he has been drilled for many years anyway, so he does have 'skills' even if his brain can't process anything beyond basic animal behaviour.

He's been in with Fury and Ortiz who were/are considered skilled and dangerous and he KD'd Fury four times in three fights and Ortiz about the same in two fights. So that's what he can still do against 'slick' HWs.

Then we have other guys who were pretty well skilled like the Polish guy and Helenius and Stiverne I and all those types who've beaten good fighters in the past.

I think he can potentially KO anyone, it doesn't really matter what their skills are. He only has to land a few times, maybe only once, depending. So everyone has their work cut out for them, especially if they don't have big stopping power. I don't mean he just beats everyone, but that he's in every fight. For instance, I think Povetkin would have KO'd him potentially, but could have also been taken out if Wilder got to him first, despite being far less skilled and refined as a boxer.

I also think Wilder is massively juiced though, and that adds to his power. The weight gain during the Fury fights was highly suspect.

Joyce doesn't have a titanium chin. He's been knocked down in the amateurs more than once. He has a good chin but by no means granite.

Did the top 5 in the 90’s all fight each other? And even when some of them fought, was it when it mattered most?

They like Joshua because he’s a big wet f*nny and not seen as a threat to their favourite boxer from 10-60 years ago. Whereas they know, if only subconsciously, that guys who got blasted out by McCall, Rahman and Sanders for instance have a very high chance of being terminated by Wilder.
