Don't think so necessarily. I think he became slightly overrated on here but that was partly down to Joshua's wavering form and people getting pissed off with Fury.

Combine that with the "best of the rest" British fighters such as Whyte and Chisora in visible decline and you can see why Joyce suddenly became the flavour of the month.

People liked his attitude, especially after Joshua's outburst post-Usyk and Fury's recent nonsense. It's pretty easy to root for Joyce. Was a bit of a perfect storm.

I do think that Queensbury has a habit of getting their marketing slightly wrong and hyping up their HWs well outside of their ability. Not so much with Joyce given his experience - but they made Dubois out to be the second coming of Tyson.. then that didn't go to plan and they've tried it again with Moses Itauma. I appreciate that HWs are a big draw, but let these guys grow at their own pace and perhaps (if and when they fall short) they retain more of their marketability.

As far as I know, Fury wasn't there last night. That's interesting, in normal circumstances you'd expect him to show face. I wonder whether there's been a falling out - he's been conspicuous by his absence.

No. He just lost a fight to a big man who can box and bang. Although he was shook a couple of times he was stopped on the eye damage and didn’t really look like being stopped otherwise.

Did some overestimate how good he was? Maybe. I always felt his style was going to do him harm some day, voted in recent poll here that wilder would do him for example. Also worry about his long term health can’t be good for him just repeatedly getting smashed in the head the way he does (that goes for all boxers, but an insane level for Joyce).

Tbh though mate don’t get why you seem to be buzzing and gloating across multiple threads that he’s been beat. We’re always moaning people don’t take challenges joes took one, is up for fighting anyone and seems an honest nice fella. The criticisms of the likes of how AJ and fury conduct business, or of AJs current performances are still valid despite this defeat. People say this era was s terrible but it could be decent and we could have decent fights if everyone was a bit more like joe Joyce.

It’s a division of hype jobs because the public and media are so desperate for a really good heavyweight. The only one that seems to be worthy is a quiet Ukrainian cruiserweight.

No. We didn't learn anything about him that we didn't already know. He is an awkward fighter with clear vulnerabilities. The job is to exploit them. Zhang is no mug and for six rounds you're going to be in a fight with him. He managed to be the guy that exposed those frailties but if Joyce's eye held out then I wouldn't have bet against him over a 12 round contest. This was more Zhang being underrated than Joyce being a hype job.

He's not a hype job. In an era where people don't fight often and don't often fight consistently to their ranking, Joyce was refreshingly honest and let's not forget, undefeated.

In the modern era anyone who's a bit different will get coverage if there's a vacuum otherwise - AJ's had a poor showing and hardly ever fights anyway; Fury is unable or unwilling to land big fights one way or the other; the rest are all on roughly the same level and all get found out eventually.

    Is he a hype job?

He entered the ring to the Terminator music, images of him on the screen with the Terminator eye. He was up against a guy who drew with Jerry Forrest and was possibly unlucky to lose to Hrgovic in a decent fight between two game but rather plodding lumps. Although Joyce didn't really do anything in the first round, other then get hit a few times, the chin started getting mentioned again. In the second round he's all over the place, wobbling around like your average cumbersome big lad in Wetherspoons who thought it was a good idea to smash 8 pints and 12 Apple Sours before 3pm. By the third he's got an eye that looks like it's at the early stages of becoming like Arnie's in The Terminator only it's going to be the ref or doctor saying "get out". The fight is eventually stopped, Joyce did nothing, even when he knew he had possibly a round left to salvage something that Juggernaut power and relentlessness just wasn't there. Whereas Frazier kept getting up and swinging at Foreman until he was stopped, Joyce plodded along at the same pace, no urgency, continuing to get caught because he only had one eye because he has a poor defence, all completely avoidable had a he planned for this properly. So it's stopped and he loses to a 39 year old guy that was kind of a figure of ridicule before the fight and I predict someone who will be beaten fairly comfortably when he steps up.

We wanted another contender, we hoped he would be it, many of us, myself included, bought into it all, granite chin, engine, fists of stone, unique skillset etc. In reality the passive Kiwi Care Bear that is Joseph The Big Lad Held Back At School Parker created this, he ramped up the hype to 11. So in summary, yes, hype job. He's done.

He also claimed Fury's soul without throwing a punch to be fair.

I like Slow Joe. Do I think he has been brought along well? Better than most i would argue. Do i think he was getting talked up like he was a man that could not be stopped or beat? Yes because both have happened and some ladz in the division are a bad fit for him. Truth be told mate i just hate the biasedness on here. Like someone said had AJ had lost it would of been he got done by a pensioner. Joe loses to him and Zhang is some quality operator. Cannot have it both ways so i make noize about it.

Did he? Or did he offer 7% of the PPVs to Joyce? Anyway, doesn't answer my question - isn't it a hype to claim heavyweight conquer for fighting Chazz, Chisora and AJ.
