This version is a little fast. I like Gibbons though. I'm glad we have a film where he wins and is able to show his stuff.
In his autobio. Tunney said that, even though he (Tunney) had taken a beating from Greb, he was still thankful he didn't (at that stage) fight Tommy Gibbons. Tunney said Gibbons had a sneaky way of moving and bringing in the hook,and he (Tunney) was not eager to meet Gibbons until he (Tunney) had found a way to compensate for Tommy's tactics. Tunney thought Dempsey's victory over Gibbon's was very underrated.
I think people definitely overrate Dempsey's size advantage. Gibbons has overcome worse size disadvantages than 12.5 pounds before.
It amazes me how Tommy, according to @klompton2, was apparently thought of as a less technical version of his brother Mike at the time. Mike actually thought Tommy abandoned technique in favour of a power punching style. From this footage, I can't really see where he's coming from.
Mike made that comment in mid 1923 after Gibbons had lost to Dempsey. This fight was over a year later. Gibbons' quote was in the context of Tommy's run of KOs over tomato cans to position himself as a contender for Dempsey.
I get the impression that the defensively excellent Mike, was considered the flashier and more natrually talented of the two. That said, as brilliant a career as Mike had, he never had a consistently dominant run of form as Tommy's up until 1920. In the 1910's Tommy went 47-0-2. He beat Harry Greb, the 15lbs heavier Battling Levinksy, Billy Miske x 2, Willie KO Brennan, Buck Crouse, Gus Christie x 4, Georgie Chip x 5, Clay Turner x 2 and Bob Moha.
