Why didn't Ali just fight abroad while he was suspended?

I thought licenses were issued by the state, but Ali's was apparently a 'federal boxing license'...are those even still around today?

Tommy Morrison was still able to find a license in the USA after he was exiled.

But Ali fought in the UK, in the Philippines, in Africa....what was stopping him from going overseas while he was suspended?

Old timers like Jack Johnson and Tom Mollineux had whole careers fighting abroad. It's not like USA is in charge of the whole world, and Ali was the biggest star of the sport....

He could have had opponents flying out to him wherever he wanted to fight from.

Not to mention Canada...they loved US draft dodgers, they probably would have even made him an honorary citizen and he could have fought up there....

But I think the UK market would have been the better move for him

Muhammad Ali was stripped of his World Heavyweight Title and boxing license on April 28 1967 after refusing military induction, he was fingerprinted and photographed, evading the military draft was a Federal Offense, punishable up to 5 years imprisonment and a $10,000.00 fine. On June 20 1967, Ali was convicted in Houston ,Texas of Draft Evasion, the judge gave him the maximum sentence. If you are a felon, you cannot be issued a boxing license, if it is issued in New York like it was, usually most states follow suit. Also Ali's passports were confiscated. So for 43 months Ali could not step into the ring with anyone, Ali did however offer Karl Mildenberger a rematch but Mildenberger's management turned it down, they wanted a fight for the title, Ali's title was vacant, also he no longer had a passport in which to travel.

If I remember correctly, Muhammad's was suspended in every state and a Federal Judge ruled that he had to turn in his passport, which he did.

EDIT: Richard nailed it above. I put this post in before seeing his.

Anytime you are convicted or indicted of a crime, your passport can be confiscated by the court.

The UK has always been the lap dog biting at the ankles for the US war machine. The ruling UK elite wouldn't have allowed Ali to fight in London while 'honorable' US blacks where dying in Vietnam pushing American imperalism. He could have fought elsewhere though sure.

I think it's because his passport was revoked, but it is an interesting thought. I wonder where he would've fought in those years, and who!

It has always been if a boxing license is issued in New York and becomes suspended, places like Nevada other jurisdiction follow suit.

A great and historically correct response Rich.
Nothing else needs to be added. What you wrote is readily available in all books and documentaries on Ali. I think it was covered in the film Ali, though I could wrong on that.

Muhammad Ali could not fight in those years that he was away, 1967-1970. He had no boxing license, if New York suspended his license, all other jurisdictions would follow suit. He did not even spar or work out, he spent time doing lectures at various colleges, earning enough money to live on and saving enough to take his Draft Evasion case to the U.S Supreme Court and overturn it, they finally did 3 months after he lost to champion Joe Frazier at the FOTC. On June 28 1971, Ali was vindicated by the high court by a vote of 8-0.

Because it's not remotely relevant to this situation.
