Bridgerweight is as ridiculous as minimumweight, light flyweight, flyweight and super flyweight. Bantamweight should be the first division for those little guys.
My thoughts. (1) Just the original eight weight classes would be too few; (2) The original eight plus ten[?] tweener divisions is far too many; (3) It does make sense that the limits change [most obviously get heavier] over time, just as the 1920 Walker Law limits were generally a little different to the older [in some cases much older] limits which existed before then; but (4) It's also nice for limits to stay unchanged over time where possible, in order to allow comparability over time [even though, e.g., messing about with rehydration rules can be just as significant as changing weight limits]. I've no idea where this gets us to.
TBH I used to be for SHW from a competitive standpoint but nowadays, I don't know, heavyweight is the premier division in the sport, the last thing you want to do is dilute the talent pool even further. Nobody is gonna care about "Bridgerweights" the same way they don't care about Cruiserweights.
I think it makes sense from the point of view that the average heavyweight is in my mind bigger than they used to be.... With modern training the guys tend to be a bit bulkier and the shorter guys have to fight guys like Fury and have a big disadvantage.....
Whilst on paper it doesn’t sound like a terrible idea, I feel like it will just dilute the divisions further and will become a haven for natural cruisers who can’t be bothered to lose enough weight to make cruiserweight, more content to be in worse shape at Bridgerweight.
Honestly... who cares about bridgerweight...midgetweight... or what the hell it is called? Lets make a poll.
As others have said, there are too many weight classes. My hat's off to the UFC for keeping things simple. Boxing should take note.
Agree with your first point but I think people "care" about whatever division has the talent. People cared about cruiser when Usyk, Breidis, Dorticos and Gassiev were the top dogs.
