I don't get it. If Jimmy Young can fool George, Usyk can do it too. Of course, in the case of the younger, more agile Foreman of 72', it's much harder.
I do not see Foreman winning this. The style advantage & how good Usyk is in implementing his own version + his his chin & endurance & punch volume spells vctory. Even with Foreman yes naturally bigger-dehydration limited his weight... With much greater power, not even similar... It would not be enough.
Foreman fought Young at a peculiar time of his career when he was pacing himself and trying to develop a fan-friendly boxer persona with Gil Clancy. According to George himself, Don King also asked him to prolong the fight so they won't lose ads revenue. Once he got going, Young by his own admission was a dead man walking, but survived the round and fortunately for the smaller, better paced and less energy consuming defensive wizard, they were fighting in the sauna of Puerto Rico. High humidity kills, since human capacity to regulate temperature falls drastically. It's worth noting that Jimmy was recently branded a coward and a kind of a quitter who couldn't secure his championship against fat as a hog Ali. Little did George know that the same Philadelphia magician would find his grit in the heat of San Jose. Ultimately Young is plenty for any heavyweight in history, but I don't believe the bout was representative of how he would fare against pre-Zaire Foreman with Sadler, Saddler, and Moore in his corner, fighting in a milder climate. In a similar manner, Foreman facing Lyle in his first serious fight since Zaire, new corner and all, doesn't exactly represent how he would deal with him in '73/'74.
Brilliant post. I'll add one thing - Foreman flew into Puerto Rico the day before the fight whilst Young arrived a week prior to the fight. One of them acclimatized to the heat.........one of them didn't.
I was always uncertain about the date of his arrival. I reckon in No Way but to Fight or By George he mentions being there earlier. Either way a terrible condition for power punching, aggressive style.
Members having their own theme song?? Now there’s a great concept! I found your song JT, well actually, you have a number of great tunes - not sure why you dropped the “B” from your name when you signed up here - perhaps to maintain anonymity? Clever. All good, your secret is safe with me. Btw, you’ve got some great pipes man! You killed this one. This content is protected
