For the first round at heavyweight no one was more dangerous than Tyson ..

Ron Lyle did and he won. But I agree with the premise of what you’re saying. The man could knock your block off

Yeah, LaPorte had an incredible chin and didn’t he hurt Nelson early on? So Nelson decided boxing him was his best option iirc…

Having just read the OP more carefully, you're correct, he specifically mentioned dangerous, i'd initially missed that.

I cited Emile, not because he was dangerous in the sense of he'd take your head off early (again, you're correct he's not dangerous in that sense), but rather because at WW slugging with him would likely play into his hands. He was huge at the weight, enormously strong, had a great engine, iron chin and good skillset from mid range in.

Griffiths could be outboxed, but outlasting him in a brawl would be some feat at WW.

@Greg Price99, everything you said is right on the money. When I was growing up in the 1960s I knew him mostly for the Benny Paret tragedy and for his trilogy with Nino Benvenuti. In the ensuing half century :ibutt I've learned more about Emile and I've come to think of him as an incredibly unappreciated fighter. He took on anyone, beat most of them and never backed down.

He was a truly great boxer.

I remember James Smith, that well known crusher of bones, promising to go toe to toe with Tyson.
He lived up to his promise to be fair to him…except the toe to toe he meant was a slow and intimate foxtrot rather than slugging it out!

Yeah he certainly fought scared. The talk was good until he got punched in the face.

Actually, Muhammad Ali. Anyone that tried to trade and bang with him got dealt the participation medal.

Yes, James only broke free for a nano sec to “cut loose” with a single right hand in the final round.

Liston’s another guy you didn’t want to slug with. Folley chanced his arm a bit but got levelled in 3. Machen knew well enough to steer clear of any heavy engagement.
