Is it acceptable to have Gennady Golovkin on the same list of the All Time Greats of boxing?

Ketchel is a top 10 middleweight so yes. GGG would rank lower. Possibly top 10. Higher than Canelo. But if you make Canelo an ATG then you automatically add GGG.

 

Trinidad was a bigger upset but Pavlik is Hopkins best win imo.

 

Just because a fighter beat an ATG doesn't automatically make him an ATG, it just means he's a good fighter

He was THE dominant middleweight of his era and was so for a number of years and when he did lose it was vs a great fighter when he was past his best and the loss is some what controversial. So in my opinion that makes him one of the great middleweights, that's undeniable.

How high he ranks is subjective. While his resume lacks a really great win over a big name, he fought who was available that would fight him and that's all a fighter can do. A fighter can't control the quality of competition that is available, just fight who is available. I think you could reasonably rank him on the bottom end of the top 10 at best to the bottom end of the top 20 at worst. I don't think he's done enough to be top 5.

In a P4P sense I can't rank him as highly. Too many great fighters and his resume too thin in terms of quality to give him the benefit of the doubt and rank him as a true great on a P4P sense. Wouldn't crack my top 50 P4P.

 

The correct legacy fight was Ward at 168. Granted, that's bad business. It's a likely loss and it doesn't generate anywhere near Canelo revenue. I agree with your assessment he was a dominant MW during a time when the division was weak. He chose the money over the challenge of Ward. Which dings him in the glory department, but was a big boost to his wallet.

 

Golovkin never got an official win over Canelo, and Michalczewski dominated Hill and won 10 out of the 12 rounds.

Again we've had this conversation alot, Golovkin was unlucky not to get the nod the 1st time. But Canelo won the 2nd fight fairly based on his effective aggression.

And the 3rd fight is well..... not as meaningful, but Canelo still won it fairly. How meaningful the win is in the grand scheme of things is up to you.

I have about the same opinion. Although I wouldn't rank him lower than 15th in MW and personally feel he's done enough to be lower top ten.

 

Ward could have had the fight at 168 but he explicitly declined it.

I like the way that people expect GGG to make all the concessions but other people don't have to.

He received a career ending back injury.

 

GGG is among the best MW ever. He is Top 5. No he would not beat Hagler or some other greats but he would be in every fight.

 

Its the way he beat them as well. The first 17 title defenses were by devastating KO'ES.

 

I see it up to the individual. I thought he had ATG potential, but his resume doesn't come up to snuff. Hall of fame worthy, but not ATG. I feel that way about nearly all the boxers currently fighting.

 

He never dared to be GREAT.
