I'll be the one to make this post since I think we can all agree this topic is inevitable. After the Ryder fight, the reality is that Canelo is clearly past his prime. He is still a good fighter that is defensively responsible, methodical and plenty of experience. But he has clearly slipped in terms of his athleticism. He always had stamina issues, but now they're extremely apparent. His once famous combinations are completely gone, he is now a 1 2 puncher with good power, but worsening timing as the fight drags on. And he only has extremely difficult opponents (i.e., Benavidez, Bivol) ahead of him where a loss is pretty likely. What do you guys think, is it time for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez to hang them up while he is still a champ and coming off a win? Or should he dare to be great and fight against the dangerous sharks lurking around his list of potential opponents?
I think style wise, Canelo was never athletic. He isnt athletic now, he is slower. He works the body and tries to counter opponents. He gasses a lot easier now and has always had that issue. He shouldnt retire but if he faces a good athletic fighter like Bivol, he will always lose. His style doesnt work well against athletic fighters.
He doesn't knock out a tough guy built like a tank and a fight that I saw him dominate, and there is question that he should retire? There isn't anyone at 168 that he still can't beat.
Everything you said is true but not being great anymore doesn't mean he should retire. He is still very good and can beat the high majority of fighters. That being said. He is aging by the day and I hope that he does retire after his next, inevitable loss. I don't want to see anyone become a Roy Jones and just keep fighting.
I think he would lose to half of those fighters. Maybe a couple years ago he would win but they are slick fighters and he doesnt do well against their style.
No need to retire, yes he's past his best but he's still good enough to beat anyone I can think of at 168. Why retire when there is still $50+ million on the table for him over the next 18-24 months. Not sure he should be taking a Bivol rematch though
For **** sake, what the hell is wrong with all of you lunatics who make these **** take threads? Ryder is a tough as nails and a hard night for anyone, and he did exactly what I thought he'd do. The only people who thought this would be an easy night at the office are idiotic casuals who couldn't pick Ryder out of a lineup.
Of course not. He may have nothing for Bivol, but he NEEDS to smoke Benavidez before he even thinks about retiring.
Maybe he has slowed a tad, but his style hasn’t changed since the last, 5, maybe 6 fights (a number off the top). Since moving to super-middleweight Canelo has trudged forward, high guard, occasional wide left hook to the body, jab jab big sweeping right hand, sometimes a little inside work. Walking forward, upright. That’s been his style for awhile. The combinations haven’t existed since I don’t know when, Maybe Golovkin I where he was pushed to the brink? This was a product of this style, vs Ryder’s style. The flat-footed, high guard approach that worked against the likes of Caleb Plant, allowed Ryder to quickly get ontop of Canelo and work him with some combo’s. Ryder is probably the best smw Canelo has faced thus far also.
Exactly, there’s always these stupid retirement questions every time a top fighter struggles with an opponent. Canelo won clear, just a really tough opponent, it’s not that deep.
Roy Jones is a little extreme but I hate when athletes go out of top. There's nothing better in sports than that one last great turn back the clock performance after you've sucked for years. Plus the way we got Canelo was because 4-5 faded greats lined up to fight him and strapped a rocket engine to his development and career. We need him to pay back that favor. Introduce Benavidez and Morrell and a few other guys to greatness.
