I agree. True, he started boxing very early and is almost 20 years in, but he's 32 and still looks good and does very well in the ring with some great activity. With all the criticism he deserves, there's a lot of positive that can be said about him.
He had a few spots of bother against a solid B minus class guy after coming off surgery, a lopsided loss to Bivol and a lacklustre win against a faded Golovkin, cut the guy some slack.
You need to be more than just slick to beat Canelo. Plant and Saunders were considered "slick" and still lost convincingly to Canelo.
Bizarre thread. Racking up wins past your prime, and taking a few losses of course, is one of the biggest hallmarks of a great fighter. Duran should've deffo retired after Leonard3 but he was past his prime after Leonard2. SRR second run, Ali second run, Pac's later career... I don't think anyone at 160-168 can hang with Canelo. He can also demolish guys like Badou Jack if he fancied. Canelo can't beat the cream of the crop @ 175, but that's because 175 is currently headed by two brilliant fighters. I also have a feeling Canelo would lose a few Oscar-style catchweight superfights but they may never happen
He can still make tons of money. But his best days are clearly gone. He's already millionaire, I would retire if I were him.
Wait, I thought fighters were still in their prime mid 30s and shouldn't have excuses even heading for 40. Canelo needs to keep fighting till he's at least 40. He needs to experience what it's like being middle age and fighting guys a decade younger. Sure, you might slow down, lose reflexes, lose punch resistance, lose stamina, have injuries, but these aren't excuses. No excuses. Age is just a number.
I mean he's slipped, but he just beat the absolute crap out of a top man in the division. Ryder is the number or number six at 168lbs that there is and it's not like that was a difficult fight for Canelo. That's rare and difficult doing what he did against one of the better fighters in his division.
No way Canelo can easily make another $100,000,000 from the sport with another 2 or 3 fights. He's going nowhere. If he loses another UD to Bivol he'll just be matched more carefully that's all...... Canelo is the golden goose that cannot be risked.
The young gun has been fighting pro since he was 15, he has fought 18 years as a pro (more than little gigi), and at 22 he had fought better oposition that gigi in his whole life. On the other hand it is not the young gun who has stopped fighting since their last match, I wonder who aged/retired who there. You can go to the "where is gigi?" thread to get some answers.
He is much much slower now. He looks fine in the Triple G fight but overnight in this fight looked old.
