In my opinion, Archie Moore trains Mike Tyson in the fine art of defensive fighting rather than offensive. Archie would have slowly brought Tyson up the ranks, discipline would have been a must in Tyson's training regiment, no nonsense. Also Moore would have realized Mike's troubled childhood and would have brought in someone like D1ck Saddler to help with Tyson.
Moore knew how to train punchers, but he would likely turn Tyson into an educated inside fighter, or move him down in weight.
Too much of a what if question to answer really. He might have given Mike a plan B that he lacked in some fights but who knows
Archie Moore understood the psychology of a fighter…I think he would have been great with Tyson…he’s like Teddy Atlas without all the theatrics
I think Archie would have valued Mike Tyson’s well-being and growth as a human and taught him a lot of lessons that I think Cus skipped because he was focused on getting himself another champion while he was still alive and having Tyson become the youngest heavyweight champ ever. Moore would have been a better mentor to Tyson as a human being and equal to D’Amato in teaching him how to fight.
True but although one of my favourite ATGs as a boxer what was his record as a trainer? I remember him training Foreman. Agree with some of the mental stuff already said but would he have done any good?? Maybe AFTER Damato.
Agreed…He would have been a great guy to call after Tyson fired Kevin Rooney …let’s put Archie Moore in Aaron Snowell’s place …or maybe even post prison
Because I think Tyson had to lose to Buster Douglas…or else he would never listen to any trainer again
Cus was more than Mikes boxing trainer, he was his psychologist, psychiatrist and at the same time his father figure. Mike had to be broken down mentally then rebuilt. Cus was a genius at this. Not sure Archie woulld have beem able to match Cus with these tools. I could see Mike having more success and staying diciplined if Archie picked up the torch after Cus passed.
While some of your post makes a lot of sense, Cus did leave some things out as like you put it, a father figure. A father wises up his son on the way of the world, especially wayward women, and of people who may take advantage of his fame as well as hone his skills in the ring.
Exactly what I thought. The style he’d use to fight would be more suited to Cruiserwieght size fighters. The big heavyweights he had to hunt down. Maybe Archie could be more of a mentor type than an actual trainer. Look what happened to Foreman when Clancy changed George’s style in the 70’s.
Even if Cus had lived long enough to teach Mike the ways of the world(he died when Mike was 19), once Don King got hold of him it would all unravel. Don would play the black on black brother thing and all of Cus’s teachings would slowly be wiped out. Someone like Archie Moore may have given Mike a chance but King was so brilliant at getting what he wanted the only thing Archie or any other trainer could do is try to improve Mike infighting skills. Mike was too smitten with King’s gangsta big brother reputation to listen to anyone. His old camp couldn’t do it.
