Teremoana scored a good win overnight in the IBA World Championships against a stocky, southpaw Frenchman. He put a count on him in the 2nd with a solid right hand. They've got him boxing behind the jab more than I'm used to seeing but I guess it makes sense in this form of the sport (or any form of the sport, for that matter). It worked okay for him this morning. He did tire a bit as the fight wore on I thought although perhaps that was as a consequence of dealing with an increasingly desperate Frenchman. Very important to win that one & progress to the next round where he will face reigning Olympic champion & home country favourite, Bakhodir Jalolov. Great experience that will be for Teremoana particularly if he can give a good account of himself. Look forward to seeing what happens to Jalolov if Teremoana hits him with a good right hand. Beat him & he'll likely get the Kazakh, Kunkabeyev, in the next round. Really tough draw but the experience he would get if he could progress would be life changing. The Armenian #1 seed went out to an unseeded Chinese so there's one part of the draw that's packed with talent & the rest is wide open.

Fck No Limit George Kambosos will meet Maxi Hughes in a lightweight fight in July in Shawnee, Oklahoma, sources told ESPN’s Mike Coppinger. Kambosos, who is now with Top Rank after agreeing to a new co-promotional deal with Lou DiBella, won't be fighting in his homeland because of promoter Matt Rose's pay-per-view exclusivity rights for fights that take place in Australia.
I don't like seeing our blokes get shafted to that extent. It was blatant & shameless. Fast Eddie appears to be using our guys as cannon fodder. Not that anyone would have been fooled by that result. Anyone who saw it knows who won.
Spark has impressed me lately. When I watched Tim steamroll him in a couple of rounds I never would have guessed he would have ended up having the career he has…….was unlucky not to get the win today.
Bakhodir Jalolov forced a RSC in the 2nd round this morning against Teremoana after Teremoana took it to him in the first. Jalolov actually had to work a lot harder early against Teremoana than he did against Justis Huni by virtue of the pressure Teremoana applied. Teremoana certainly wasn't giving away anything in terms of physical strength & at one point rag-dolled him. Jalolov unleashed the big southpaw left in the 2nd round that shook Teremoana up early & prompted a count. Jalolov managed to land further hard lefts thereafter prompting another couple of counts & resulting in a stoppage. There were no knockdowns & Teremoana wasn't really hurt on either the second or third occasions that counts were applied but they were hard, clean punches. A great learning experience for Teremoana who I remain convinced has a great future in the Heavyweight division (Super Heavyweight at this level). He needs the fitness to apply the kind of pressure that he did in the first round for the full three & enough defence to block, avoid, parry that big southpaw left from Jalolov & we'll have a world-class fighter. He certainly had Jalolov's full attention during the fight & Jalolov had to go through the gears to get the stoppage. The biggest compliment you could give Teremoana is how seriously Jalolov appeared to take him. Jalolov looked disinterested for much of his fight against Justis Huni. He was very focused for this one. Big, raucous crowd supporting Jalolov also. Callum Peters, our 20 yo Middleweight who won silver in the Commonwealth games, collected a win on points 5-0 against a Moldovan in his first appearance in the tournament.
Callum Peters won through to the medal rounds (quarter finals) overnight in the Middleweight division of the IBA World Championships. He fights an unseeded Brazilian tonight for Bling. We love a bit of bling here on the Stifler's Mum thread so let's hope he can do it. It will go with his Silver from the last Commonwealth games. That's the good news. The bad news is that I think the Men's Middleweight division has been canned at Olympic level so our best amateur boxer will have to find another weight division to fight in at next year's Olympics. Seriously, what's the world coming to when the Men's Middleweight division is booted out of the Olympics? It's the weight most normal people who are in shape would walk around at. If you only had three weight divisions at the Olympics, Middleweight should be one of them. Fair dinkum. All our other guys are out. No-one else managed more than one win. Several had tough draws facing #1 seeded fighters early on while Teremoana had to face Jalolov, the reigning Olympic champ. Good experience of course for those who did manage to register wins & they will presumably form the basis of who next year's Olympic team is chosen from. Good effort boys & hopefully the best is yet to come. The more international tournaments we are able to send them to between now & the Paris Olympics will determine if they can improve enough to be in medal contention. The Paris Olympics begin at the end of July next year.
Tim Tszyu will make his first WBO super-welterweight interim world title defence against Mexican challenger Carlos Ocampo on the Gold Coast on June 18. Tszyu made good on his promise not to be idle while waiting for his shot against undisputed champion Jermell Charlo by taking on another tough opponent. Ocampo has a record of 34 wins, with his only two losses – to pound-for-pound star Errol Spence jnr and world-rated Mexican Sebastian Fundora – coming in world title contests. Tszyu’s famous father, hall-of-famer Kostya, fought five Mexicans during his career, including the man considered the nation’s greatest, Julio Cesar Chavez. He never tasted defeat. This will be the first time Tszyu steps into the ring with a Mexican. “I don’t need to fight, I want to. I fear no one and will fight anyone,” Tszyu said. “Carlos Ocampo is the perfect test for me right now as his only losses have been at the very top, for titles against the very best. ‘Dad fought five Mexicans and beat them all in his career ...
