title says it, interesting to hear your take as I think both fighters have an underrated jab but perhaps im wrong.
Tyson had a really good jab. But a 5'10" HW with a 71in reach doesn't really get many chances for the jab to truly shine. Put him in against some HW's his own height and I'd wager his jab starts looking a little like a Liston or Foreman jab in terms of how it lands.
Tysons jab was pretty solid. He seemed to only utilize it though in situations where he couldn’t just blast his way through with power shots. As far as I know he stopped using it all-together after prison. It would’ve been a massive help against Holyfield who seems to be vulnerable to good jabs.
I would have to say Mike Tyson, who used his jab to set up his furious combinations to the head and body. Joe Frazier on the other hand used to bob and weave while applying pressure to his opponent in order to land his very brutal left hook to the body and head. The difference being that Frazier was vulnerable to a hard right hand, Tyson hit with bad intentions after making his opponents miss.
I agree with you, Richard. I think Mike Tyson's jab was better than Joe Frazier's, though heights and reaches somewhat limited both of them, and Joe Frazier's old arm injury made his jab a little less effective than it probably could have been. But, then again, it may have helped his left hook some.
Joe Frazier's left hook had a curvature to it, but it carried immense power when he put his entire weight behind it.
With Joe's crook in his arm, the jab wasn't something he routinely employed in the traditional range finding, defensive or setting up combos. His combos were set up primarily from his bobbing and weaving. Tyson's jab was piston-like, fast and heavy but not something he overly employed throughout his career. When he threw it, a good punch and with his footspeed, excellent weapon to get into range. He lacked consistency with it and became much more of a predictive fighter once the headmovement and combinations started slowing down.
