Although only 12 at time, I recall being 100% confident Hagler would KO Tommy. Maybe because i was young, or perhaps because he just gave off the impression he was unbeatable for a time. So, I could have told Eddie if he'd have listened...

Hopefully, "not very". The fight isn't particularly close at all, the 'rounds' are, but Marv's winning most of them.

    I had it fairly close.

    Marvin Hagler vs Roberto Duran

    1 Duran
    2 Hagler
    3 Duran
    4 Duran
    5 Hagler
    6 Hagler
    7 Hagler
    8 Hagler
    9 Hagler
    10 Hagler
    11 Duran
    12 Duran
    13 Duran
    14 Hagler
    15 Hagler

    144-141 Hagler

So i decided to watch this fight again after discussing Hagler recently, i have to say this was a much better fight than i remembered. Duran i felt did well early on when it was more of a boxing match, he was able to land some good body shots and pot shot Hagler on the outside with right hands.

After 5th round i thought it was all Hagler as he decided to stop having a boxing match with Duran, and come out as the aggressor and simply out punched Duran between rounds 5-10.

Now strangely in the 11th round Hagler came out dancing ? and virtually threw nothing in this round giving the round away. And that seemed to turn the momentum in Duran's favour as it turned into more of a boxing match, as Duran once again was able to pot shot Hagler with right hands to win rounds 11-13 pretty clearly for me.

Hagler sensing the fight was getting closer, and probably learning from Antuofermo fight how to pace himself. Came out in rounds 14-15 giving it all he had emptying the gas tank to clearly win rounds 14-15.

Overall a pretty entertaining fight and much better than i remember as i said, Hagler showed some good defence parrying Duran's right hand. And Duran himself showed some good elusive skills rolling with Hagler's punches.

    Good Stuff JT

It's understandable as to why Futch drew that conclusion, having seen the strategy in action, first-hand. It also indicates that this might well have been something of a perception of Hagler back in the day, when Hagler was attempting to establish himself on the world scene.

I seem to recall Hart taking something of a similar approach to Hagler but, by then, Hagler had progressed, having learned his lessons from Monroe (I). He boxed beautifully against Hart, both coming forward and off the back foot, leaving Hart drained of energy and wanting out of there. Soon after, Hagler would demonstrate this new level of resolve against Monroe in their first rematch, to even the score.

Futch probably didn't quite fully account for the impact that outright loss to Monroe had had on Hagler. He just learned from it and became stronger all round.

This fight came up in a thread a couple of years ago, asking for fellow posters scores. This is how I have it...

    How could anyone forget that?

It was at the core of the Leonard's showcased comeback. Repeated, over and over again.

It's a wonder they didn't end up renaming Leonard, 'Sugar Ray Lazarus'.

Our scorecards were identical apart from 1st round.

Yes but it's funny how those small differences can alter the perception of a fight. For example:

By the end of Round 10, your scorecard still has Duran in a position to win the fight by decision - if he wins all of the remaining rounds. This must have seemed increasingly realistic, as Duran took 11, 12 and 13, thereby making Hagler's last two rounds seem like he'd saved himself from the jaws of defeat.

My card, by the end of round 10, effectively seals Hagler's victory. Unless Duran scores a KD or two, or a stoppage, it's in the bag. So rounds 14 and 15 are seen as a great ending to punctuate that victory.

Not that boxers themselves should think in these terms mid-fight :)

I think Hagler purposely took his foot off the gas in rounds 11-13. Probably remembering how he gassed late on in the Antuofermo fight. He wanted to save his energy for a strong finish.

I dunno about "battered" but a clear decision sure. It's quite common for ppl to score their actual fight for Hagler by a hair anyways so I get it. For the record, I prefer Hagler but always score the fight for SRL. I've came to peace w the actual decision a while back so I wish others did the same. It's been almost 40 yrs like plz heal lol.

This, I think, is quite likely.

Although, it probably wouldn't surprise you to know that I thought Hagler took the last two rounds against Antuofermo, as well.

    :D

Definitely JT, one scary dude was Marv. But it was also down to the fact that when you sliced that bald head open, a boxing glove lay there. Not just any old glove either, a glove that still had Mustapha's Hamsho's blood all over it!

I think it was also down to the fact that Marv had given Minter and Sibbo real hidings too, so he'd had a big reputation here.

    Prime Hagler beats him.
He still beat him in 87 and was robbed by the refs.
