When he fought Ali it was an odd thing to see potentially the fastest HW champion hands in with maybe the slowest.
I always felt like Sung Kil Moon was a bit lumbering for a little guy- but like most slow handed guys it’s because he tried to punch hard, when you tense up like that and get tight with every shot throwing wide or laboured, you lose the looseness needed to throw those blistering short shots that you get with smooth proper form.
1) An attempted cherry pick from a montage? 2)The punches in that sequence were not slow 3) Context. Williams was already wounded, backing to the ropes. Liston could afford to take his time and pick his shots at any rate - which he did and they put Williams out. If they were of insufficient speed how is it that they all got home?
Hi Buddy. Thanks for the upload, I feel a tad sad when I see Sonny smiling, have always felt he did cut a lonely figure during his career, he always looked happy when in the company of young kids, something he shared with his nemesis Ali, strangely poetic in a way. stay safe guys.
The world's number one heavyweight contender was in the ring working with a very fast light heavyweight. Although his size made him seem as ponderous as a water buffalo, Liston was in fact faster than the sparring partner. He worked on cutting off the ring, something he anticipated he would have to do with Patterson, who was lightning fast and a fine boxer as well. Time and again Liston trapped the light heavyweight along the ropes. Liston threw light punches and let him go, only to trap him again. After two rounds of this, a bigger man gloved up and got into the ring. A number of handlers in gray sweatshirts with "Sonny Liston" crudely stenciled on them bustled about. One of the men simply sat before a small phonograph and played "Nighttrain," over and over again. Kid Dynamite sported two fresh black eyes incurred when his doctor had to rebreak his nose to set it right, and because of this as many people were looking at him as were watching Liston. At the first exchange, Liston knocked his new sparring partner down with a body shot. It didn't look like much of a punch but the pain was very real. The boxer writhed about the canvas in agony. In the end he could not continue. Disgusted, and out of sparring partners, Liston climbed out of the ring and began banging the heavy bag. This went on for three timed rounds.
Hi Buddy. Neat thread, thinking Monzon would be a candidate for boxer who is slow, he was bereft of footwork, other than to pad forward and close the distance, his jab was somewhat a range finder, not snapped out like Holmes for example, and the follow up right cross, had a lot of travel due to his rather long slender arms, so yes, I see Carlos as slow. stay safe guys.
I just watched Holmes vs Holyfield's first six rounds for about an hour- those guys must be slow as heck.
You must have spent hours dreaming up this barb aimed at Sonny Liston. The content is,of course, absolute rubbish but nice try.
