True, but Corbett has been in a similar situation before when he fought a puncher who heavily outweighed him in Jeffries and he almost won. I don't think the Foreman fight goes the same way, but it's fair to say Corbett is better at using footwork and movement to survive than most.

George’s ability to cut the ring off is hardy ever mentioned. Watch HIS footwork. Once he corners Corbett. God almighty. It’d be horrible. Maybe not too horrible as James J would not stay upright for too many punches. But the punch/punches he does take. Stretcher, hospital, surgery at the least. At the worst an enquiry about how this tragic fight was allowed to be sanctioned.

 

IMO Jeffries had seriously gone back,his judgement of distance and his timing were not there,his wind was not what it had been.I also doubt he really believed he had the beating of Johnson.His former manager Brady stated Jeffries was always leery of Johnson and wanted no part of him,make of that what you will.
It's very possible imo that, in that condition Corbett would have won their first encounter.
Jeffries had been a great fighter,he certainly wasn't as good as he ever was,but because he declined to have any warm ups fights or indeed spar with any young contenders its very difficult to say with any certainty at what level he was at.

Prime Jeffries v prime Johnson would have been a hell of a fight,but my money would always be on Johnson

Jeffries was a better athlete than the contemporaries who chose to face. He got by on that and when that got put on the shelf too long he didn't have the skills to deal with another athlete, one who had much, much more refined skills. He was all there. But the world, in the form of Jack Johnson, had passed him by.

Willard didn't have the track record that Jeffries had. Jim's resume may look short but he was fighting top level dudes early on. And I don't discount Dempsey's victory over Willard anyways. He took the crown from the guy who had it and did so in emphatic fashion. Sure, the media glorified it a bit but the result stands.

 

This. Foreman is tailormade for Corbett. Foreman was very powerful, but against a clever fighter Foreman was very beatable and Corbett knew every trick in book.

 

All available rounds are on YouTube. What I observed from the outset was that it was primarily Jeffries who was intent on wrestling with little attention to throwing actual punches.

Atop that, it wasn’t so much strength that Jeffries applied as it was his own sheer weight - leaning forward, to move Johnson back. As to pure arm strength - Johnson appeared to prove himself Jeffries superior at every turn - though Johnson displayed obviously well educated technique and understanding of optimal leverage.

Very early in the piece, Johnson easily pushed Jeffries arm well behind his own back - just as Johnson said he would do before the fight.
