He had an insane resume. I read he found he had swelling on his brain but decided to keep on fighting.
yes, he was a good fighter with some solid wins over some very credible opponents. Not a great but certainly a worthy world champion who fought regularly and came to fight.
He came to Ft Worth TX to fight Troy Dorsey few years back but claimed he got injured sparring & had to drop out. A guy that was with him in a bar down on South side said he got in a fight there went to hit the guy missed & hit the wall messed his knuckles up. Anyway like always he got dressed up as a walking Christmas Tree & came to the fight. Troy fought a guy from San Antonio instead Paez always dressed up was a real showman
A lot of talent but he spent a lot of energy clowning and putting on a show. Very good resume, but a lot of either-way fights. I really liked him. Good fighter with a good personality.
He actually was and he was extremely tough and rough which gets overlooked Beat my favorite Grove two times. I still can't believe he got up when Spann dropped him. Gave a very good account vs Whitaker.
Honestly I thought the first Grove fight was a bad DECSION. Grove dominated alot of rounds. But in the rematch Paez knocked out Grove in the 11th. So Paez proved himself to me. People forget but Grove was avoided at the time and was having trouble getting fights and that's why he fought Paez in his hometown.
He could be lazy and his conditioning was suspect. Some say because he had trouble making 126. As a result, he'd fight in spurts, making many rounds closer than they had to be. He didn't have great equalizing power so that meant many fights were close and went to the cards. His fights against Louie Espinosa were that way too.NBC loved him back in the day, when they had fewer fight cards on the weekends. He and Tony Lopez were standouts on that network.
Good story. I think if Paez and Troy Dorsey fought 1,000 rounds, it would be 499 to 498 and we’d be arguing over who won the last one, haha. They were made for each other — high-volume punchers with strong chins and no real power … Troy would go non-stop for 3 minutes and Paez would have four spurts in each round where he completely clobbered Dorsey and you’d either call it even or scratch your head.
He was a good fighter, and a good entertainer as well. He never won his biggest fights but in most cases he was competitive.
He was pretty darn good. He was Naseem hamed before Hamed took that role of clown prince. But had some good wins. Just a little shy of being elite. Fought a LOT of good guys!
