    Floyd Patterson had class but his chin sometimes let him down, no wonder Sonny Liston was licking his chops for a match against Patterson, not even President Kennedy saved Patterson on the night of Sept 26 1962.

    Machen had probably seen Liston and Williams fight, maybe Machen had never seen Johansson fight and was just coming forward because IJ was backing up and not being aggressive? From the weigh in part of the video, IJ looked unmarked, that should have given EM and his team an idea that the guy could fight, had some defensive ability, and didn't get hit much. I don't know how much film would have been available in 1960, but probably little or none. The fighters probably had to figure out how to fight each other in the ring.

    The Machen vs Johansson bout was on Sept 14 1958.
