Foreman never hit Ali with his best shot, right?

We hear this often, many times from the same poster. Well Foreman, bless him, begs to differ.

Q: What's the hardest punch you threw?

A: I hit Ali right behind the jaw in the fourth round. He fell against the ropes and looked at me, and I kept waiting for him to fall. And he didn't fall. I said "Oh, man!" and I started sweating.

I'm glad you brought this up. Foreman says he hit Ali with everything; people always say Foreman hit Ali with his best, but I never thought that to be true. Well, I guess he hit him with his best, but he didn't fight his best for Foreman. First time I saw Rumble, I kept waiting for that massive explosion from Foreman, and it never came. He fought Ali with much more of a Joe Frazier type of approach, trying to push Ali into the ropes and wear him down with body blows. Foreman never hit Ali with the kinds of punches Frazier and Norton got creamed with.

George couldn't push Ali around like he pushed around other fighters. He just couldn't. Ali was the more physical fighter that evening.

If it isn't somehow clear, Foreman was talking about a single punch.

Of course Foreman didn't bash Ali virtually completely at will like he did Frazier and Norton. Ali ain't those two. He did however have virtually free reign to his body and absolutely smashed it. Ali was obviously far more worried about blows to the head and fought accordingly.

To quote Ali “I told you all he didn’t hit hard”

I would have loved to see Bert Cooper fight 1974 Ali.

He couldn't because he wasn't trying real hard to. Duh.

I am aware you were talking about that specific punch. I was addressing the thread title's question and the general consensus comment about Foreman's punching in that fight.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one.

You could probably add a few more question marks.

Not imo. He tried to wear Ali down, rather than expend everything in one round to knock Ali out.

Foreman was flat out unable to hurt Ali. It was always obvious when fighters actually hurt Ali because he would make exaggerated reactions or ofc actually look hurt. There was none of that against Foreman. On the contrary Ali was hurting Foreman all night and his punches even sounded louder/harder than Foreman's. Ali is just a bad matchup for Foreman but people think it's the other way around.
