We don't always have the means to buy a book at whim or read it. If there is anything your curios on drop it in this thread and If I find an answer I'll respond with what I find. Interesting book, for a quick example did you guys know Nino Valadez was allegedly in a voodoo cult?

Larry Holmes favourite nickname is "Big Jack" Bundini gave him the nickname and to this day (At the time of writing) he likes to be called by it.

I never knew that …that’s interesting….Larry had a brother who worked his corner…and he was always yelling “C’mon Big Jack” …I thought he just didn’t like being called Larry …lol

Yep, It was because according to Bundini he was built like and fought like Jack Johnson. Tall with skinny legs, I don't see the build, Larry was a pear but I also never saw Larry at 181-190lbs like he was then- but they did use a lot of the same blocking techniques, Larry really leaned into them as a mature fighter.

Larry was a perfect example of a guy who is physically strong…in great shape…but has a lousy physique…it’s genetics

Trying to set up a similar deal as Fraziers Cloverlay Syndicate Larry went to see Gil Clancy at the request of Mort Levy his boss at Strongwear Pants when he was a truck driver- his "Dream Job" as he called it was to be a truck driver till he got it. After 4 rounds of sparring in his "try out" with someone whom isn't mentioned. Mort told him Gil called and said he would be a contender, never a champion, not the quickness of Ali or the wilfulness of Frazier nor the power of either. "Holmes will make money, but he's not a great, great athlete" something to note Larry had the flue in his try out.

Simply untrue, it's his diet. He had a layer of pudge on top and he ate enough to keep it there.

Don King used to carry autographed photos of himself before anyone knew he was was. He used to ask guys in casual conversation "Want an autograph?" Holmes thought they were for his fighters until he saw the eight by ten photos of Donny in his bag and no one else, signed "Best Wishes, Don King." At the time he was managing Ray Anderson, Jeff Merritt (His first) and Earnie Shavers,

Not yet. Page 53, but I did just hear how Roy Williams sparred Ali 10 rounds two days in a row and got fired- he did get the 5gs he felt he was owed though. The tone of the writing might suggest Roy did a lot better then he was meant to.

I think this is the one where he says Howard Cosell tried to make a pass at him and rubbed his thigh.

Well apparently Angelo Dundee called Larry the N word multiple times during his fight with Ibar Harrington.

There’s some interesting things in the book.

I remember one passage about when Harold Smith, who (it turned out) had embezzled $20M+ from Wells Fargo and spent it propping himself up as a promoter and overpaying fighters, brought a suitcase or duffel bag full of cash, like $1M, to Larry to try to sign him. Larry said he got sweaty and nervous, iirc had trouble breathing, looking at all that money … had to open a window just to catch his breath. Don King showed up and shooed Smith away.

Larry put it something like this while illustrating his plight with King underpaying him — he was at a diner or something and he said every time he defended his title for King, he got a pack of sugar (taking one at a time and piling them up) … he should have gotten a whole sugar bowl’s worth, but if he tried to leave King he’d get frozen out of the picture and held up in court, so he just kept collecting his sugar packets and letting them pile up.
