I see your "might be" and raise you an "almost certainly was", Mcvey. I have Sam #3 on my p4p all time list. I have to go down to Packey Mcfarland at #14 for the next that never won a world title and to Charley Burley at #27 after that.
Not. Sam Langford is not The GOAT boxer, it's Sugar Ray Robinson; argued. But Sam Langford is Top 5 All Time Best Boxers, arguably. There are other contenders for GOAT Boxer (such as Bob Fitzimmons, Henry Armstrong, etc.), but hardly any decision for GOAT Boxer would leave Sam Langford out of the Top 5 All Time Best Boxers.
I know he met Sam Langford in a nursing home in Boston, Massachusetts. He described Sam as a very pleasant man, who laughed easily and often. He said Sam felt no ill will toward anyone and would gladly live his life over again and change nothing. That surprised Granddad somewhat, since Sam was denied his due title shots, primarily based on the color of his skin. Sam just shrugged, Granddad said, and said: "That's just how it was back then."
