To me his physique wasn't too bad. It's his spindly like chicken legs that do it.

Apparently Norton was an arse of a person who wore too much jewellery.

While there's some truth there, it is also true that it is far easier for some people to stay lean than others. Then there's where you store it. If you're someone who stores it in the torso first, it's apparent when you gain even a few pounds. If you're someone who stores it in the lower body first, it takes a lot more to notice.

Once he got above 215, he became pear-shaped. Didn't really matter though, as it didn't really catch up to him until he was older and 235+... and even then, for a guy in his 40's with a dad bod, he was damn good.

Any mention of vomiting into a garbage bag at the end of a fight?

It is in this book. I started a thread on this a long time ago.

it’s in the chapter when he talks about the Tex Cobb fight.

Larry's a great guy and the book was very good .. I always liked his story about the sparring partners playing cards at Deer Lake and with a big pot at stake and leaning Earnie Shaver's way some tried claiming forfeit and Shavers stood up, grabbed the money in one hand, show his other fist and dead serious and said anyone wants to take this money come and get it and no one moved an inch. Larry said one wanted any part of Earnie in a small hotel room , not Leroy Jones, not him, not anyone.

In a small confined space Earnie Shavers could be the GOAT

Would love to hear about diet, training camp stories, and his fight with Mercer.

He's got a great story in there when a young guy working as Ali's sparring partner. He brings a girl to a party where Ali is, turns around for a split second, and then Ali and the girl are both gone.

The Mercer fight story isn't that interesting. It's pretty much what you saw. (note: this specific story might be in his second book) The Ali one is interesting. Ali was talking all kinds of **** to him during the fight, despite the fact it was clear Ali couldn't do anything. Kind of weird.

Of the books by boxers I've read, the best Larry Holmes fight story was Shavers's description of their fights. Great description of how terrible it is to be in the ring with a guy who has a stiff jab you cannot get past.

That's even funnier. Like, did Larry already pay her but then Ali swoops in and takes what he paid for?
