Currently in negotiations for 9/16. Undisputed super middleweight championship of the world at stake (Álvarez's sixth, third, fourth and sixth defenses of the WBC, IBF, WBO, and WBA titles respectively). Charlo is cirrentlyt the WBC middleweight champion, but last defended that belt two years ago next Monday - his last time in the ring, period.

I think Charlo would win this if the deck isn't stacked against him.

Interesting possibilities with this one. Even though Alvarez is younger than Jermall he has a lot more wear on his tires. Alvarez has aged noticeably in his last three or four fights and is definitely not who he used to be. The problem is that we have no idea who Charlo is. He's still undefeated but has not fought in a couple of years. They say he had a mental health episode and even if he is completely ready to go I have no clue what his skill level will be. Currently, I am taking Canelo by decision but that could change depending on how 'Mall looks and acts over the next couple of months.

A while back I was all up for this fight but now it just seems like Canelo would be taking the ugly girl to the big dance.

This fight does nothing for Canelo at this phase of his career. The Ryder fight should have been Charlo.

This is an example of a fight that is Big and Meaningful™ for the sport, but that I can only get so excited for because I can't really bring myself to hold my nose and force myself to root for either one. I don't want either to get a dub the size of each other here, nor to hear their fan bases getting to gloat about it for months afterwards. :sisi1

Sadly that describes more and more fights lately. Being far less plugged into the pipeline up and coming prospects that in the past, there are precious few remaining competitors that inspire any sort of emotional investment on my part - just a bunch that, if they do move the needle from "neutral indifference" whatsoever, move it the other way, to varying intensities of dislike. :nusenuse:

...which I think is a phenomenon that eventually affects everybody no matter their passion for even years on end; @CST80 has expressed sentiments like this as well.

It just isn't a great time for having fighters to give a crap about. Ironically coinciding with a time when a lot of "big" fights are in fact getting made. Like, why the hell couldn't we have gotten this willingness on the part of promoters and networks to play nice and make some money together, in past eras??? :shakehead:

Huh, where'd this get announced? I've been looking and the only thing I can find in regards to Canelo's next fight is a rematch with Bivol or a possible matchup against Berlanga.

I'd back Canelo to win. He does seem to be slowing down a bit, but at least he's actually been fighting. Charlo will have been out of the ring for over two years by that point, and from what I've heard he's had a lot of personal stuff outside of the ring, so we're looking at someone coming off a long period of inactivity and probably in a bad headspace. Then again, some boxers don't seem to be as affected by inactivity and the personal stuff could be sorted out by then, or Charlo might not be so bothered it affects his performance when he finally gets to training and fighting again. I kinda doubt it but you never know.

Even so, I'd still prefer it to either of the other two fights I was hearing about. I enjoyed the first Bivol match but it wasn't even close, despite what the judges had to say, and I have a hard time believing it goes any different, and even a slowing down Canelo beats the hell out of Berlanga. At least there's some mystery to this Charlo fight.
