How would Tyson Fury have behaved in previous boxing eras?

The same as now. He's bat**** crazy so he'd probably beat a few highly ranked guys, have a mental crises, blow up to 400lb, lose the weight, beat another top guy have another mental crises and eventually blow his zero on a guy like Tex Cobb or Terrell.

 

Fury is set to be one of the greatest what ifs in boxing history, his legacy would likely be the same in any era. He has the potential, IMO, to beat any heavyweight in history, but is only stopped by himself.

The same way people used to say that the only man that could beat Mike Tyson was Mike Tyson himself, I believe the same saying applies to Fury.

 

Considering that Fury has mob ties in this era, he’d probably be the mob’s mascot in past eras and fight a bunch of fixed fights.

 

In previous eras, many champions lost their belts for not defending against a top contender (Holmes, Spinks, Foreman...there are many examples). Well Fury lost belts in this era but won the WBC.

I completely understand what you want to ask, but I don't think you have phrased the question very well. Bowe and Lewis failed to realize the fight; there was the WBC belt being thrown in the trash can, which I find unimaginable in the 70s. Fury could act as he wants, and defend the title against whoever he wants, but he would lose the belt if he "doesn't play by the rules". However, Fury is a lineal champion and for that he does not need a belt (just like Michael Spinks who was stripped of his IBF belt, because he wanted to defend it against whoever he wants), and while he is like that he will be attractive, as he would have been in the previous eras.

Read up on Sullivan, Corbett, Tom Sharkey, Fitzsimmons, Jack Johnson -- Adam Pollack's books are great for newspaper quotes -- those guys were fleet-tongued, world-class trash talkers. Honestly, Johnson maybe the more restrained/fair-minded of that group. Fury in their day wouldn't be exactly the same Fury of now, but he'd be the gaslight-era analogue to what he is now. [Peter Jackson, more 'high-road', but could defend himself ably against slights and insults. Jeffries not the biggest talker].

How would he have done in an era, where he had to take fights regardless of his mental health, and take them on a regular basis.

This. Fury is unstable AF and likely bipolar (idk if it's been medically confirmed, buf there are so many red flags). You literally have no idea if he'll show up half-hearted with little interest, if he'll make a dozen excuses and avoid a fight, or if he'll suddenly have the raging determination of a lion. A promoter's worst nightmare and a trainer's biggest headache. All that talent and size with the reliability of a wet match in a dark cave.

 

Yeah he's good friends with Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan who's a really big fish let me tell you, he's considered big enough on a global scale and smuggles drugs/firearms in many countries. One of the reasons why Fury is banned from entering USA.

 

He would've lost a fight already if he were really that unrelaible.

 

He has gotten a lot worse than he used to be. The frequent bouts of inactivity and low-level opposition have helped him avoid a potential devastating upset loss.

 

Don't act like he couldn't have spent 80% of his time in vaudeville and 20% as a boxer.
