"On September 18, 2018, it was reported that Benavidez had tested positive for cocaine from a urine sample collected on August 27 by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).[45] He was eventually stripped of his title and received a four months-long suspension through February 2019 by the WBC."

So according to you two geniuses, the guy considered The Face of Boxing was supposed to wait around and clear his schedule for a guy who got suspended for drugs, then lost his belt again at the scale and went beltless for almost 2 years. LOL

4 years ago, on June 18, 2019, Benavidez was belt-less. After the cocaine suspension, he won the WBC title back on Sept 28, 2019. At that time Canelo was not even a (Full) SMW World Champion. He only had the WBA regular title which was said to be not a legitimate world title. At that time everyone was saying he was ducking Callum Smith and would never fight him. No one was even talking about Benavidez as a possible opponent for Canelo at that time.

Canelo didn't become a full SMW World Champion until 19 Dec 2020 when he beat Callum Smith. Benavidez was suspended for almost an entire year after a positive drug test on September 18, 2018, and by the time Canelo won the full WBA Title, Benavidez was beltless yet again. You're criticizing Canelo for not Unifying against Benavidez, a guy who had been stripped when Canelo beat Fielding, and didn't regain it until a year later? Benavidez then lost his title for a second time, this time on the scales on Aug 15, 2020, against Roamer Alexis Angulo, which was before Canelo had even captured a single (Full) SMW World Title.

Canelo beat Callum Smith on 19 Dec 2020, a fight that people said he couldn't beat, he was ducking, etc, to win the Full WBA Title, at which time Benavidez was beltless. That was also for the vacant WBC Title since Benavidez lost it on the scales. So when exactly was Canelo supposed to Unify against Benavidez? When Canelo only held the Regular WBA and when Benavidez was suspended for cocaine?:risas3:

The only time a "unification" was even possible between the two was between Sep 28, 2019 and Aug 15, 2020, at which time Canelo had not even become the Full WBA Champ. Come on, this is getting absurd. A unification between the Regular WBA Champ and the WBC Champ? No, the priority there was for the WBA Regular Champ to fight the Full WBA Champ, to unify the WBA, which he did, then sought out the other Title holders. Had Benavidez not lost his title on the scales, Canelo would have challenged him like he did Plant and Saunders.

Not yet, but it could turn into a duck if Canelo doesn't fight him soon. My guess is that eventually Canelo gets sick of getting called a duck / getting pressured to fight David and finds the motivation to take the fight.

Personally I think Canelo is reluctant to take this fight now. It's a tough fight and he doesn't have quite the same fire he used to have. I think he can still win it but it will require full effort. Plus there's not a great deal for him to gain. It will go down as merely another decent SMW defense. Fighting for a LHW/Cruiser strap is more motivating to him and even if Canelo loses it won't hurt his legacy in the same way that losing to a direct rival would.

He made Golovkin wait, just because he wanted to make him wait. He dropped his belt to not face his mandatory in Golovkin. He gets the fights he wants, when he wants. He wants no parts of Benavidez then, or now.

lol it's absurd to argue what you were arguing, that somehow Canelo was duking Benavidez 4 years ago, when he was beltless, suspended for cocaine, lost his belt on the scales, etc, before Canelo was even a full SMW World Title holder. Now you're trying to deflect by bringing up Golovkin, a completely different situation, a guy who not only was his mandatory, but was Cotto's mandatory before he even fought Cotto for the title, at a weight (Cotto's demand) that was 5 lbs lower than the weight that GGG was fighting at, who he then fought 3 times.

Can anyone think of any more blatant ducks in history than this?

Benavidez is not only the clear number 1 contender (for 3 years) he is also his mandatory, the most lucrative fight for Canelo by far, and the division is so bare that Canelo has to look in other divisions for a fight. It can't get anymore blatant imo.

I own several bits of official Canelo merch that is hung up or resting on the other side of this room. I love Canelo, I really enjoyed 2021 for personal reasons, and watching Canelo's undisputed run was the cherry on top. I thought Ryder was a reasonable post-surgery, stay-busy opponent. I think he could beat Bivol @ 175 if he boxed better and received extremely favourable judging. I enjoyed GG3. I thought he won GGG2. I actually rate his Kovalev win. The Jacobs win showed how far he was from GGG at the time. I didn't mind Caneloweight as I respected him for challenging Floyd. I don't even mind him fighting Badou Jack for the legit WBC cruiserweight title

    This is a blatant duck

Canelo could fight Spence and JermEll back to back

    He's still ducking Benavidez

When did title defenses become a bad thing? They are the true marker of legacy. Winning another belt in a weight class you'll never defend is a surface level deep achievement. Especially when there are 5-6 belts in each division.

Canelo isn't ducking Benavidez in the sense that he's physically afraid of him, but I do think he's more inclined now to take no-risk fights. Lose to Jack, well you're not a CW. Lose to Bivol again, well you're not really a LHW.

But if you lose to Benavidez, you're no longer the king of your own division. I do think Canelo is driven to be the big dog on the block, and losing a title defense is worse than these fights at reach weights. The Jack fight was preposterous.

It's a good thing for sure, and probably underrated by fans who seem to prefer to see multiple weight division jumping (even if some of it is cherry picking).

Canelo says he wants the Bivol rematch @175 again Bivol wants the fight @168 for all the titles Canelo has scrounged. Bivol agreed to all Canelo's terms in that fight & he whipped Canelo's ass. So its only right that Bivol gets to choose the terms this time. If We Be Crooks refuse to sanction it drop that title Be a man just for once Canelo & fight a legitimate opponent in a 100% fair fight I don't think you have the necessaries to do that though. Why don't you just retire

If Canelo thought he might beat Benividez he'd be fighting him with all the advantages he always has in every fight. Dmitry Bivol proved he was the better man when he schooled Canelo. So Canelo says he wants Jermall Charlo who hasn't fought for over 2 years or Badou Jack who must lose 20 pounds & then agree to a rehydration limt LOL This is so embarrassing for you Canelo addicts I'm sure
