How does this one play out? Can Tunney keep Rocky at bay and win a decision or does Rocky break him down eventually?

It's an awful lot of pressure, if it's 15 rounds, for Tunney to keep Rocky off of him.
From that era, if anyone can beat Marciano it's maybe Gene.
Im gonna flip for Marciano, in which Tunney out boxes him for a while, but Rock never gives up and eventually catches up with him.

I'd favor Dempsey to do so as well. He holds the major advantages imo

I agree Ferg. For one thing, notwithstanding Gene's mobility, I don't see Tunney having the necessary power to keep Rocky off him otherwise. I can see Rocky chasing, incrementally walking through and eventually wearing Gene down.

Yup, think that's how it would have gone, mate.
    A painful ending for Gene!

Gene faces one of his worst possible matchups. He would quickly run out of energy needing to take 2-3 steps for every 1 Rocky takes. But Gene being a professional would save his legs and fight at mid range when the pressure was too much. The trouble is, Rocky doesn't get tired and is a lot busier than Gene no matter the range. Rocky also hits significantly harder and is way too durable for Gene to really hurt with regularity.

I see Rocky losing the early rounds but is landing the more telling shots even by the 4th. Gene's legs are gone by the 8th, and Rocky stops him by the 10th battering him against the ropes but needing to eat a hell of a lot of leather to do so.

It's possible Rocky wears him down, but Tunney does have all the tools to beat him in a UD.

In a planned 15 round bout, Rocky wears out the effeminate bicycle running Tunney and drops a huge Suzy Q right hand on his jaw, ending the fight in spectacular fashion in the 14th round. It's possible that Tunney earns a split decision in a 10 or 12 round fight, but the crowd riots and literally tears him to pieces afterwards.

I would pick Marciano but it is not out of the realm of possibility whatsoever for Tunney to win this fight. Rocky Marciano was an ATG but he was undefeated simply because of the era in which he competed, not because he was unbeatable at any point in recorded human history.

I think Prime Rocky Marciano wears Prime Gene Tunney down and stops him, whether it is a twelve rounder or a fifteen rounder.

I very much enjoyed and was engrossed by part II of Gene’s auto bio A MAN MUST READ.

Actually, though we’d be very hard pressed to gather the relevant data, I for one at least, would be interested to see all the HW Champs top 5 favourite reads.

Comic books permitted also I guess if that’s all there is on offer.
