He was above average but he was never gonna win any world titles. He didn't have any one area where he really excelled. As such he was good enough to beat most guys he faced but failed at the top level.

    Not all that

I enjoyed having fighters like him padding out the division though

I've always considered him to be about the same level as Schulz, Mavrovic and Herbie Hide...

Gave a faded Tyson a really tough fight with his hit-and-hold tactics, before being one-shotted by Iron Mike. Not a bad heavyweight by any means, just not good enough to compete with the top guys.

Solid when prime. The draw with Briggs in 99 maybe his best display, great fight actually.

He was a solid gatekeeper. I feel like guys underestimated him and he gave them a tougher time than was expected (Moorer, Briggs, Tyson) but at the same time, he had no signature wins. His biggest was overturned when he tested positive for PEDs

Lewis obviously mopped the floor with him

He was moderately skilled, so so power, poor athletically and well short of the top level.

That said he was brave, would fight anyone anywhere and gave his very best every time he stepped in the ring. In his prime aside from Lewis blowing him out, Francois gave everyone he fought a solid workout (Tyson, Moorer, Briggs for example). I admired him for this. A few Big name heavyweights today would benefit from having a fighting attitude like Botha despite his limitations as a boxer.
