Without doubt the Sky machine was huge for Matchroom and the main driver for their success. Add in a super confident Hearn gaining tens of thousands of followers on his socials week on week and they were getting very good traction and bringing new eyes quickly to their ever increasing stable and fair play to them. Job well done.

DAZN are clearly minted, but in my humble opinion, they screwed up not buying BT when they could have done because they badly need PL football to drive decent sized recurring subscriptions.

I think if nothing really changes in the next 3 years of Matchrooms recent contract renewal they will get binned in 2026. No one subscribes to that platform and the general sports fan would not prioritise it over Sky or BT.

It wouldn’t do huge PPV numbers. Nobody has heard of DAZN and with no advertising through Sky the general public barely had a clue it was happening.

 

Drama Show read it from his mate EverythingBoxing on twitter so it must be true.

 

But Canelo did 500,000 PPV buys against Bivol and Golovkin on DAZN and 350,000 against Ryder on DAZN in the US.

I remember the prices were very high for tickets. Also Hearn said this in an interview recently.

If you went anywhere in the two weeks before you'd have seen billboards. I saw them on urban motorways around Manchester and Birmingham, on trains and train platforms in those regions, and also on the side of buses. I heard the fight previewed on news and sport bulletins, saw it on breakfast television and all over social media. I also got a full screen splash on Virgin Media during the fight week telling me how to buy the PPV, and a banner ad at the top of my home screen.

If it hadn't cut through to the general public, there would not have been such uproar when Benn's result came through.

Just going from my experience of friends/family/colleagues who always watch the big fights on Sky but didn’t know when this was.

 

It cut through to the mainstream, Matchroom had made sure of that. BBC was all over it, TalkSport has spent nearly a year talking about it, I saw billboards as you say, social media. It wouldn't have got anywhere near AJ on Sky numbers but even something like 300,000 buys on top of the gate would have been a decent return.

I would imagine DAZN would take as little cut of the PPV as possible because it's in customer-acquisition mode - which means the promotion can break even more easily. Reminds me of Sky "paying a telephone number" for Bruno-Tyson 1, years ago without having PPV at the time, they needed hooks to get new customers in.

 

If Joshua Franklin only did 175,000 on DAZN then would have been very surprised if Eubank Benn did over 100,000.
