What Advantages (if any that is), did the old fighters (pre 1940) have over todays boxers?

They did, I suppose they had to back then. Money wise, fighting three or four times a year would be peanut s.

    Lol.
The alphabet bodies messed up our sport the most, ten different champions in one division...

    experience.

but the question misses the point. in basically no other sport can a man walk out of a time machine and compete by basically the standards that they know. why can't pele play in the modern era straight away? a bunch of reasons. why can't babe ruth play modern baseball on his first day in this century? a bunch of reasons. could agostini even start a modern bike?

there are slight rule differences and sports science that hurts older guys in matchups, but the matchups are not just stupid like they would be in other sports.

The best actually always wanted to fight the best, and often did.
They never seemed to gas as easily as some of todays fighters.

True but we cannot get away from the fact that the alphabet bodies issue started happening from 1963, when the WBC formed and had their own champions.

They don't have much advantages besides fighting more often and i would argue much harder. with one title, the color line, it made the fighters of yesteryear so much hungrier.

As @kingfisher3 said, lacking modern nutrition and training is a disadvantage. But the reality is a punch is a punch. You can drop Langford in against any lightweight or middleweight in history and i wont ever guarantee he'd win or perform convincingly. but i can promise Langford will give them more hell than nearly anyone they'll have ever fought.

i guess what i'm saying it comes down to one thing. the fighter's spirit.

This. There's nothing like doing a thing to get better at it. Sparring is OK but actual ring time is priceless. There's a reason why those EE guys can jump into high level fights and do well - the 400 amateur fights they had prior.
