Interested to hear how you guys rate Pernell's victory over Julio César Vásquez to claim his fourth strap?

How do you rate it as a performance, Vásquez as an opponent and how do you feel it adds to Whitaker's legacy?

Whitaker was too slow at 154, Duran looked far better v Moore and Cuevas despite being out-boxed by Benitez at 154 and destroyed by Hearns, both thosewelter`s were far better than Whitaker at 154.

It adds a bit because Vasquez was a good fighter (he later put a whipping on a young Winky Wright) who was a natural, solid 154lber. Pernell was a small Welterweight.

Vasquez dropped Whitaker from memory and hurt him to the body a couple of times before Pernell out slicked him for a hard fought win.

It’s a better win in hindsight than what he was credited for at the time. Whitaker was a brilliant fighter.

Very good definitely adds to his legacy Vazquez had made 10 title defences at the time I believe, he was alot bigger and of course as others have said floored Winky Wright almost half a dozen times.

Arguably in his top 5 wins IMO.

I suppose it depends how you rate Moore as opposed to Vasquez? Not saying you are wrong but while Duran looked awesome against Davey, Moore was a novice compared to Duran over all and compared to Vasquez at the weight.

I would say Vazquez has an argument for sneaking in the top 10 or just outside it.

I’ll leave that to others to say but we’d have had a much clearer picture if a mooted unification match with Terry Norris had materialised.

    Norris would have destroyed him.

    Maybe.

He should have whipped Simon Brown and Keith Mullings too but didn’t. Norris had some glaring weaknesses in the ring namely his shaky chin and terrible self control that saw him have a lot of scary moments and actual defeats that a guy with his ability shouldn’t have had.

I’d make him the favourite but a Vásquez victory wouldn’t have shocked me at all.

I think you make some very good points. On paper Terry is a nightmare for anyone at 154 but I also feel pretty much any decent fellow champ could have a chance due to the issues you noted, unless he was naturally significantly larger, as was the case with Taylor.

He seems a classic case of a very very good fighter who found his level vs Whitaker. A bit like Maurice Hope who was excellent but when he had to fight an ATG he lost.

    I rate it very highly.

The 5ft 6ins Whittaker was never anything more than a natural LW. He was undersized at WW and really had no business at LMW.

Vasquez was 53-1, only loss via DQ, and 12-0 in WBA LMW world title fights, including a points victory over Ronald Winky Wright.

    It's a really good win, from a p4p perspective.

Norris at his best was one of the most skilled boxers of the 90`s and boxed Brown`s ears off in the rematch.

Didn’t stop Brown destroying him in the first fight for the reasons I stated, namely Norris was chinny and could be reckless.

He likely beats Vasquez but Terry coming in a fighting dumb can’t be discounted either. Vásquez was a good, solid very strong fighter.
