For fans who watched this fight at the time, how did you think it would turn out? What was your reaction to Hagler and Duran's performances immediately afterwards?

Like most I thought that Hagler would stop a brave Duran in the later rounds.

I thought prior to the actual fight if Duran somehow made it past 5rds. It would show how great he actually was.
After the fight, it showed Hagler could be taken out of his game by a fighter who could match his skills and size. Ray Leonard, come on down..... Exactly what Duran told Leonard after he faced Hagler.

Everyone favored Marvin big and the fight showed the mental chinks in Marvin's game far more than the physical ... for all his talk of being Marvelous, he had self doubt ... saw it vs Vito (1) and Duran ... his best moment was going balls to the wall against Hearns ... he could and should have done it against both Duran and Leonard but didn't ..

As a huge Duran fan I thought Hagler was simply a bridge too far ,I felt Hagler, one of the best middleweights of all time was simply too big and too good for a former lightweight to beat and I thought Hagler would take a UD. But he made it a really close fight and it was up for grabs after the 12 round, Duran said afterwards he just got tired.

Thought Marvin would chew him up and spit him out. A mismatch, to be honest and thought it 'd look like the Scypion bout.

    Interesting thoughts everyone!

It is hard to judge how this effects Marvin's legacy and it was frankly a bit of a no-win fight for him. If he had blown out Duran like Hearns he would have received no credit for blasting a former lightweight and but if Duran (as he did) proved to have a lot left in the tank and competitive people would have asked why he didn't blast him out!

I actually feel with hindsight it is a good victory as Duran was clearly a freak of nature and a legend and boxed one of his greatest fights, many other champs would have lost but Marvin showed a champions heart to grind out a win. Overall a far more meaningful performance legacy wise than for example Monzon over Napoles, despite certain similarities.

I thought Hagler would stop him, and probably brutally. I was at school and all my pals were of the same mind…Duran is going down and down hard!

Then a few months later, most of my pals believed Duran would give Hearns a tough time on the back of his stubborn and resilient performance against Hagler. I on the other hand wasn’t buying it. I was in the minority of one amongst my classmates, as I tipped Hearns to blast him out. “But, but, but…he went the distance with Hagler! What can Hearns do that Hagler couldn’t?” were the shouts from the majority.

    Funny old game, boxing.

I thought Hearns would beat Duran by UD, 1. due to his huge size advantage and 2. Duran had just cashed a massive check for the Hagler fight and wouldn't be ready. Then before the fight I heard Duran had to drop over 40 pounds in a short time so I felt even more secure he'd lose.

My initial thoughts were that Hearns would outpoint Duran, but closer to the fight listening to my dad and his friends talk, led me to believe this is going to be easier for Hearns than I first thought. All the talk was…
“Hearns Reach far too great” “Hearns will jab him to death.” “Stronger than Duran” “Naturally bigger.” “Far too tall” “More powerful.”

All that adult chat seemed so one sided in Hearns favour that I went to school the next day and proclaimed that Hearns would blast Duran out by Round 10.
I was only 8 rounds out haha!

The Duran Hagler Hearns triangle really had me picking Hearns over Hagler ... my thinking at the time was anyone Hearns could hit solid early he would take post Duran and I felt he would hit Hagler early .. the Hears fight is far and away Hagler's best moment, the only fight he went balls to the wall against an A opponent ... he took a monster shot early and immediately fired back ... that night he was marvelous

When my brother in law and I were on our way to the local Community Center to view the Marvelous Marvin Hagler title bout to be shown on Closed Circuit television, we both agreed it was going to be a good fight at first because of Roberto Duran's toughness. But we both agreed that Hagler would stop Duran as Hands Of Stone was really a blown up lightweight, later welterweight. We were both amazed how Hagler would have to struggle with Duran later in the 15 round bout to win on points, many in the crowd were very dissatisfied with the final result.
