Exposed - it depends upon your starting point. "I know that some will bring up how Liston was really older than advertised or that Liston didnt take Ali seriously enough but he looked so slow and sluggish on his feet." This bit leapt out, I could be wrong but it gives the impression that you are not really interested in a balanced appraisal. There were factors that affected Liston's performance as well as the fact it was Ali he was up against. Exposed is a pretty ridiculous term to use.
nobody would have known he was past prime until seeing Muhammad dealing with him. Everyone thought sonny was just getting better and better after he beat Floyd the second time.
Exposed? Nah Donald Curry was more of an exposure than Liston was. After his loss to Honeyghan, he was leveled by McCallum and Norris, all three were good by not great punchers. Curry didn't have a great chin, it was exposed by multiple different fighters. After the Ali fights Liston went on a 14 fight win streak, until 1969. When he may have been in his mid forties according to some accounts when he was finally stopped again by Leotis Martin. He also ended Martin's career, so though he was K'oed, he was still plenty dangerous. It was more a revelation of how good Ali was , a early warning to the rest of the heavyweights just how unique a skill set and physicality he had. To this day, we still haven't seen any heavyweight that had the skill set and physicality to handle that version of Ali. Though we've seen a few that may have given him hell.....
No proof that Liston ever reached much past 40. most big people who don’t know how old they are …wind up being listed older to get work rather than younger.
Completely disagree and I think every other Hall of fame Heavyweight since 1964 would have done better vs Ali than Liston did.
I don’t know if Curry was necessarily “exposed” but his career certainly never recovered properly after the Honyghan loss. seemed to me Curry was legit. A gifted talent. Don relied on having an extra half second on everyone else. But it just went after that beating. It never came back. Once Don lost that half second of timing, he started getting cut and butted because he was leaving his head in the way like he still had the speed to beat a guy to the draw. It wasn’t there anymore. But His head was there though. It was now in the way to hit or for the other guy to run into it with his own head. Curry never would have developed that technical flaw of leaving his chin so high had he had regular speed. it worked perfect when he had that extra half second to react.
Completely untrue. Every official record has him born no later than 1930 which would put him at 40 years old when he died.
