Bowe won the 1st fight but Holyfield's trainer Lou Duva had a strategy to use Evander Holyfields speed against Bowe and tire him out. It backfired terribly.

Holyfield won the 2nd fight but Bowe was a little out of shape and the fan man may have helped Bowe out as he was getting tired.

Who wins a fight between Bowe from 1st Holyfield fight vs Holyfield from 2nd Bowe fight with no fan man ?

Bowe from the fight Holyfield Vs. Bowe 1 would beat any version of Holyfield.

I think Bowe from the first Holyfield fight beats Holyfield from the first Bowe fight - clear points decision.

I think he might even drop Evander, maybe some time round the 11th.

For some reason, I reckon the 10th round would be a barnburner.

You should change the title of the thread.

Bowe from 1st Holyfield fight vs Holyfield from 2nd Bowe fight

I think Holyfield from the 2nd fight might have had a much greater chance given that he had a better gameplan against Bowe.

Bowe would win Holyfield at his very best barely scrapped by a Bowe who was 10 pounds heavier compared to their 1st fight. And even then he needed a bit of luck with the Fan Man, which came at an unfortunate time when it looked like Bowe was turning fight around in the 7th round.

Bowe was at his very best here and would win. I almost wonder if the older more muscled Evander from the Tyson fights would have done better, but I think Bowe just had his number.

I think the fan man favored Bowe who was overweight and wouldve probably tired out

Not at all Joe. Gave us all (well, me) a little chuckle and your post explained it.

Good thread. FWIW, I think Bowe of Holyfield 1 always at least scrapes by any version of Evander. He hit a height at heavyweight that night that Evander could never match at the weight, simply because of his size. Evander might match him for skill but Riddick was doing it with an extra 20-odd lbs.

However, Holy had a consistency way beyond anything Bowe could dream of replicating though so should always rank higher in the list of greats.

Just to go slightly off topic I think Holyfield from the 1st and 2nd fights definitely beats Bowe in their 3rd fight. I think Bowe was lucky that night that Holyfield was very poor due to Malaria. If Holyfield had the energy he would've finished Bowe off in the 6th round IMO.

What I would say is that if Holyfield was busier inside in the first fight or chose to box more he’d have possibly got the decision. It was a close fight but Bowe was edging the rounds because he was punching inside and Holyfield was not! I suspect they thought Bowe would punch himself out. You can hear Duva and Benton say Bowe is blowing and dying out there in the corner. Major error.

Holyfield’s best showing at heavyweight was against Douglas. If that was Ali or Holmes people would rightly be raving about it. He started very well against Bowe (fight I) in round 1 boxing, a very dominant round. I’m a ginormous Holyfield fan but the guy was an idiot that fight. He completely outjabbed Bowe from the outside every time they fought there, which is why despite Bowe winning, my scorecard was close.

Weirdly in the second fight Bowe’s jab was more effective and Holyfield’s wasn’t so dominant on the outside. This is ignored because people love to harp on about Bowe’s weight rather than his actual performance being quite decent. It was certainly a much stronger performance than Lewis’ awful showing in his rematch against a washed Holyfield, but only one gets criticised.

My take is that Holyfield with a rematch plan regardless of the added weight would’ve probably beaten the Bowe of fight I. Fan man 100% helped Bowe so I think the second fight is harder to draw conclusions from. I think Holyfield’s prime did end with the second Bowe fight as well. He had some good/great showings after but was fighting in spurts.

I've heard this too and think this is why Holyfield got rid of Duva after this fight

Agreed with you. Holyfields best performance was against Buster Douglas. I think his prime was 89-93

Meh I think p4p he was better at cruiser than heavy so I’d add his cruiser year in to his prime. His prime years are pretty clearly 1986-1993 to me . He was very green against Qawi but looked a seasoned pro after that.
