HOF PR man Bill Caplan...who got into the fight game in 1962...and who knew and worked with the top fighters since the early 1960's...gives his list of the best heavyweights... 1) Joe Louis... 2) Ali... 3) Holmes... 4) Marciano... 5) Foreman... 6) Frazier... 7) Lewis... 8) Holyfield... 9) Tunney... 10) Dempsey... 11) Liston... 12) Norton... 13) Bowe... 14) Jersey Joe Walcott... 15) Patterson... 16) V. Klitschko... 17) Tyson... 18) Jerry Quarry... 19) Jimmy Ellis... 20) W. Klitschko
Same top 3 as me. Assuming achievements in one's own era is the primary criteria: Johnson, Jeffries and Wills are strange omissions. Difficult to not see Charles or Langford in a 20 either. Tunney, Norton and JJW look high. Vitali above Wlad is strange. Quarry and Ellis are strange inclusions.
When was this list made? Because Jimmy Ellis over Klitschko is criminal if this was made this year. Also there's no world where Tunney is number 9 and Jack Johnson isn't even on the list. No way Tunney did more at heavyweight than Johnson.
