What if... Sonny Liston s fight had fallen through with the young Muhammad Ali, so The next challenge would be from George Chuvalo? Liston maybe not taking the fight seriously against the iron chinned Chuvalo, could it actually be George pulling off the shock win..?
I highly doubt it. He would be right there for Sonny Liston to hit. That is not a good recipe to defeat Sonny Liston with.
I don’t think so. I realize Liston was past his best but I still think Chuvalo would absorb too much punishment for his own good.
I don’t know - I don’t think SL would lose, I am just unsure how this fight would go entirely. I’d be interested to see Liston fight someone who likes to boar in and made a career out of mauling guys, someone stout and strong. I don’t remember Liston ever fighting on the back foot but if GC can move the bear around which I think he’s capable of because he’s a barrel who gets physical it’s at least going to pose questions and I think GC would come out of this looking better then expected, as I don’t like Listons inside skills all that much. neither guy was a savant inside which is why GC might look good if he can force them to fight there, look at how good Buster Mathis looked against Tyson for a lil bit. I don’t know but I don’t think SL would try to stop GC coming in but he might if he doesn’t like the eb and flow, the rematch would look more favourable for SL I think he’d shut GC down before he ever got any momentum and might stop him or he might not but he’ll win much easier.
Actually I think being right there for Liston to “hit” is exactly how you beat him. At mid to close range, Louis would make a meal of that low hanging left of Listons, those slow hands and back him up into unknown territory and club him like a baby seal. He doesn’t have a playbook for a fighter who can fight the way Louis could, even Marciano.
I think that George Chuvalo's face would have resembled Ground Sirloin after absorbing Sonny Liston's massive Ham Hock 14 inch fists, I see a standing stoppage around the 7th round. Then the galloping gourmet would get a bright idea after the bout and concoct a new recipe with Sirloin and pieces of Ham to celebrate the occasion.
Except for the Quarry fluke, good fighters were always able to get out of the way of Chuvalo's left hook. So no, I don't think George could have done it.
Chuvalo would plod forward to his doom. Chuvalo would be a tough customer but he's much too hittable. Liston could just keep spamming him with jabs for 15 rounds like they are in a video game or Liston could really open up and the referee stops the massacre.
Yes. He would have greatly upset Liston who would need to pause his drinking and gambling to steamroll George before continuing again.
Only the slimmest chance of an upset if a less than ideally prepared Liston becomes exhausted from pounding on Chuvalo at some point during the 15 rounds - but I think Sonny stops George before stamina becomes a major factor.
