Hearns stopped making middleweight in 1989 before DLH turned pro in 1992…Tommy was effectively finished at the top level that year when he lost the rematch to Barkley at light heavyweight, and he stayed at cruiser for the rest of his career. They were so many divisions apart when they were both active and at such different stages in their careers that I don’t remember anyone suggesting that they should fight. Put it another way, no-one criticizes B-Hop or Roy Jones Jr for not fighting Hearns too, and they were closer in weight at the same time.
In what year do you suggest this fight should have taken place? Hearns last MW contest was in 1988. ODLH turned pro in 1992, winning a strap at SFW in 1994. ODLH didn't even fight at WW until 1997 when he beat Whittaker. In the 1st fight Hearns contested after ODLH vs Whitaker, he was a 190lbs CW.
Exactly….Hearns was way past his best by the time Oscar turned pro….he definitely wasn’t a big draw when DLH was winning titles at welter and higher. I don’t see what it would’ve added to DLHs career, or how it’s a ding against him that it didn’t happen. It’d be like criticizing Julio Cesar Chavez Sr for not fighting Roberto Duran.
