Conveniently ignoring the fact that Bugner retired in 87,the year Foreman began his come back! LOL . A man in his 40's comes back to the ring after 10years absence and fights guys with 36 -3-2 and 20-7-0 records and you're on his case?
I'm wondering what you make of these opponents? Beshore 30-13-1 won 1 of last 9 Applegate 11-14-2 lost last 5 Henri 13-15-1won 1 of last 6 Mitchell 7-13-3 hadnt won any of last 10 Eatman 22-20-5 won 1 of last 9 Simmons 8-8-1 won 1 of last 4 Whose opposition were they? Rocky Marciano's
Sounds like a perfect opponent for comeback Foreman, especially since Bugner didn’t actually retire in 87 like you conveniently claimed he did.
Yes he did he had the last fight of his first career on the 20th of October 1987. He made his comeback 8 years later against Vince Cervi 8-3-2 whose ability was some way below Fuliliangi's and Sekorski's!
I think he could be reasonably rated below Jeffries Johnson Louis Charles Marciano Liston Ali Holmes Tyson Holyfield Lewis Wladimir Klitschko So how would he be a top 10 lock when you also have guys like Dempsey/Wills/Langford in addition for whom you might be able to make a case
Second career Foreman is one of the worst lineal heavyweight champions of all time. Very easy to outbox went life and death with Alex Stewart, gift victory over Axel Shultz couldn't ko Crawford Grimsley. I still give second career Foreman credit for able to compete at a good level.
Vitali has a case too: 1x lineal 2x champion 13-1 in title fights 3-0 in title fights after age 40 (most wins in title fights after 40 at heavyweight)
He's definitely overrated by many but he is one of the all time great boxing sagas and that is 100% to his credit. George was a natural physical marvel, possibly the naturally strongest man to ever hold the title and a genuinely hard man .. with all the tragedies of the sport he is a role model and a legend.
I think he's underrated because of his H2H potential. Prime Foreman vs the rest of the top 10/15 he's the favorite in most match ups in my opinion. One of the few that has the Tyson match up locked down, Lewis is a tough fight where you could argue either way, Holmes is tough but I'd favor Foreman. Liston and Ali are the only ones I'd say have a decisive edge on him.
Hes a little overrated IMO. Hes a great Heavyweight whos top 10 ever but I wouldnt put him in my top 5. He simply doesnt have the depth in his resume.
He might be a little overrated in some corners, but I'm very sure that I myself greatly underrated him when (approx. 25 years ago) I first developed any interest in such matters. Georges late career is fairly unique but, in terms of adding to his legacy, I think that going the distance with Holyfield, giving a very respectable account of himself and, at times, rockinging the champion, is actually a greater credit than the title victory and reign. Beating Moorer, the endurance and still sifficient power and the patient encouraging and waiting for Moorer to react aginst his own interests, are also a real credit to Foreman. I do feel that the stars somewhat aligned for Foreman to become and old champion; and, though a defeat, I rate his going into the lions den against Holyfield a bit higher. Anyways, when we talk ATG heavies (top 15-25), Foreman is quite safely on that list, top-10 should cause no eye-rolling, and there are certainly non-nonsensical interpretations of what George was and had and did by which he might be considered top-5.
