Bud & Spence are lucky they hit even those numbers. People frozen in the morgue are more verbally engaging than both of them put together.

The recent numbers are not lying. He did double Spence vs Crawford and he is outselling Canelo.

No, he didn't double them, Garcia did. As @CST80 noted below from a previous thread.

All that's due to Ryan Garcia and his legion of teeny bopper TikTok fangirls. Ryan even in losing, is still the face of boxing.:deal: Ryan Garcia pulled in over 1.2 million buys, all on his own.

If you need the proof, here's Tank PPV buys sans the drawing power of Ryan Garcia. The contrast is ****ing jarring.

    Tank vs. Santa Cruz 200,000
    Tank vs. Barrios 210,000
    Tank vs. Pitbull Cruz 150,000
    Tank vs. Romero 250,000
    Tank vs. Hector Garcia 210,000

It may have been racial in the fact that it was a Black vs a Hispanic but it wasn't negative. It was a clash of nationalities that take pride in their fighters and they lined up behind them. No hate. That's the way I saw it.

That’s still pretty good numbers for what many would consider a purists matchup.

Neither of these cats have cross over appeal. Bud isn’t exactly a media darling.

Absolute nonsense. Casuals don't care and don't even understand the sport.

For example if Floyd and Tank suddenly announced they were fighting it would probably do over a million buys.

Whereas Beterbiev and Bivol would probably do about 400k maximum.

Because boxing stopped being about the best fighting the best along time ago.

They love playing the a-side b-side casual attractors

Of course, it did worse than Ryan-Tank. Hell, it barely did better than Pacquiao-Thurman. Several factors of that:

One, both Tank and especially Ryan are great at self-promotion and are easily marketable. The few times I heard Bud on the radio it was like listening to paint dry, and Spence with that mouthful of fake teeth is so bad at communication people have (rather cruelly) accused the man of having brain damage. Speaking of brain damage, PBC-Showtime did their usual stellar job of shooting themselves in the foot by not giving Mike Coppinger a press pass, directly resulting in ESPN not including talking about the fight at Sportscenter and turning what was supposed to be a big face-to-face segment on First Take into a quick five minute "Stephen A likes this fight."

Two, they marinated this fight way, way, WAY too long (again!). They should have struck while the iron was hot, which was after Spence beat Brook and Crawford beat Horn. Everyone already saw them as the two best at welterweight, everyone was eager to see them get it on. Instead, they dilly-dallied and this is the result, instead of both guys at their primes with the larger, less (self)damaged Spence having a better chance against the still-new-to-the-weight Crawford for welterweight supremacy, the loser (which would still have been Spence, just so we're clear) having Porter and Garcia and Ugas to rebound off of and build up for a rematch.

Three, when they decided to fight...just as the football season technically started. Ryan and Tank happened when football was not in season, which meant (in America anyway) big-name stars interested in it, tweeting about it, going to the fight, doing half the work of Golden Boy and PBC for them, then Golden Boy also did their jobs. The whole writer's/actor's strike also didn't help, but that one I'll give them a pass on because what were they going to do there?

Four, which is a bit of a mix of two and three. They waited to have the fight just when the options to watch and not pay $85 bucks on PPV is at its height. Streaming options, both legal and illegal, have only increased since when this fight was first suggested. Unless you are Canelo, AJ, or possibly Inoue in Japan, between five to seven-hundred thousand is the new benchmark of success. Boxing doesn't have UFC's benefit of having a virtual monopoly over a combat sport and then multiple paywalls between you and a loyal fanbase.

Finally, we get to five which is...PBC's entire marketing campaign was telling everyone that Crawford stinks, isn't a real champion, and that his welterweight competition wasn't "elite" (while selling us that Danny Garcia and Ugas were  ). They did everything they could to make Crawford into a non-entity that was beneath Spence's dignity to fight. They said that he was with Top Rank and that Bob Arum was making the fight impossible (even though they had THREE FURY/WILDER FIGHTS IN THE TIME SPENCE-CRAWFORD WAS A THING). They said Crawford himself was a problem when he had the audacity to see proof of funds when they wouldn't give him a guarantee in 2022 (and we later learned by watching Spence's fat ass he wasn't even training and that PBC had no serious intent of making the fight at the time). They said for years that even if they did make the fight no one would buy it and they'd lose money on the guarantees of both fighters alone. Frankly, they should be ecstatic at the numbers it did do.
