Otto Wallin vs Murat Gassiev in the works for September

Because since schooling Breazeale he's been ducked by the likes of Whyte and Joshua. Not many other contenders in that region of the rankings are doing anything and they're certainly not looking to fight Gassiev are they? Gassiev has to take the fights he can get. Right now the division seems like it's about to turnover (Wilder, Fury, Usyk, Zhang could all be gone in a year or two) and nobody wants to knock themselves lower in the serial by taking chances. Fighting Gassiev is taking a chance.

Gassiev can obviously stop a fight with one punch but Wallin is a skillful guy and Marat won't have an easy time cutting off the ring. He can probably track down Wallin over the course of 10 rounds - but if he can't this could go Wallin's way by decision.

 

Which is still more than what Gassiev since he got schooled by Usyk 5 years ago.

Good fight if it happens, but Wallin is always unlucky with fights and Gassiev always pulls out of fights with injury so unlikely it happens.

 

Fortunately for Gassiev, Wallin also has trouble getting fights. Wallin isn't the sort of fighter who is going to humiliate his opponent by KO'ing him - but he is the sort of fighter who will humiliate his opponent by giving him a boxing lesson. And nobody wants to lose a lopsided decision in a boring-ass fight.

No chance their fight comes off. Gassiev didn't do so well against our favorite southpaw, did he? I like Gassiev, and still think he could win, but this is the one fight our boy should avoid!

 

Great matchup. Neither of these guys have been able to put together any consistency of fights. They appear to have been locked out by the promoters. What a travesty the HW Division has become.

 

Gassiev did have shoulder surgery in late-2018. But I suspect that all his subsequent injuries were fake

People seem to forget that he's been embroiled in a series of lawsuits with his last two promoters (most recently Warrior Promotions). There would be no point in taking fights if his former promoter(s) were going to put a lien on his purses or petition the sanctioning bodies to have the results thrown out.

I think Gassiev finally settled those lawsuits at the end of last year.

 

The winner might depend on who has the least mold, mildew and ring rust on them and who's motivated. Using that as a guide it's a:
Toss up.
