EDIT: Just noticed that it's 94 Foreman, Gene has a good shot of taking a decision

 

What did foreman do against gregorio peralta? Peralta was about the same height an weight as tunney, and tunney was way better than peralta.

 

The knee jerk reaction is Foreman by KO, but Gene has some of the tools needed to win here. But Can he stay out of George's way?
Hate to bet on it, but if the bell rings for round 9 ???

 

Tunney beats old George comfortably, but I don't see any proof that he can hang with young Foreman. He hasn't proven he has the durability at heavyweight needed to take George's blows.

 

Hell...Foreman was embarrassed and decked by Jimmy Young in March 1977..and Young is no Gene Tunney...

 

I would not count Gene out here. Yeah he be an underdog imo, but a real lived one. If the likes of say Jimmy Young could pull it off, I would not be too shock if Tunney was able too. This is one were I say GEORGEEEE, but MAYBEEEEEE Tunney could pull it off lol.

 

I don't think people are taking into account this is 94 George NOT 70s.

Tunney has an almost non-existent record against heavyweights and never contended with the sort of size, strength and "diversity" that Foreman brought to the ring. I'm being generous to Gene here.

 

Tunney beats both versions in my opinion. Too fast, too clever.

Ali was surprised by Foreman'd speed & he was a really effective ring-cutter.
Ali had to go with his brilliant strategy to win, & was still out on his feet-no indication Tunney could survive that kind of shellaking.

While Tunney had a stylistic advantage as a boxer, I cannot see how he or anyone at just over 190 can be favored over prime Foreman.

 

Stopped him in ten while still learning on the job (pre-Archie Moore part of his career if I remember correctly) two years before he first entered the ring with Frazier. That's a lot for a fighter who started boxing as late as Foreman, especially since it's partially time spent under the elite tutelage of the likes of Sandy Saddler and Archie Moore.

Peralta went the distance against Bonavena and twice against Lyle. Never stopped at heavyweight except on cuts years prior to fighting George (though granted, bar Foreman, Lyle, and Bonavena, he didn't face many quality fighters.)

 

Tunney can definitely steal rounds and prove himself the master of his craft that he is, but I don't fancy anybody from the LHW range against Foreman. Too good against the small man, and too much of an educated puncher.

 

Foreman was great at cutting off the ring. A prime Tunney would've been faster than the Ali that fought Foreman at RITJ. His ringcraft was impeccable and he would never have found himself leaning on the ropes. Foreman wouldn't have been able to chase him down for 15 rounds. He would have gotten discouraged and fought impatiently as he was wont to do at that stage of his career.


A lot is made about Clay's b'rilliant strategy', but let's remember that the reason it worked as well as it did was because Dundee has the ropes loosened.

I don't think weight matters as much as you do.
