Super Myth #1 ,that somehow Duran manipulated Leonard into this fight ? Insults before a fight work on novice amateurs not Olympic gold medalist and world champion level fighters. How come Angelo Dundee never said a word about his tactics during the fight? Watch the Duran Leonard fight with Dr. Pacheco doing the announcing , he said that the plan for Ray was to take Duran out early by the 4th round. Since he was well acquainted with Angelo they spoke often. Leonard was bigger, younger and faster so they thought a lightweight wouldn't be able to take welterweight punishment from a good hitter ,also Duran would come to Ray aggressively creating openings . But this was the greatest lightweight who ever lived and his speed and defense confused Leonard. That Roberto Duran was never seen again in the ring, he had some great moments later but nothing like this 15 rounds of hell was ever seen again.

The post is over 16 years old.

Regardless there's mountains of evidence out there that Duran did indeed push him into a frenzy, calling his wife a ***** and telling her he'd **** her after he wins, telling her he'd keel her husband, stalking Leonards wife when she'd be out in a car without him etc. It's levels above what would only worry an amateur to say the very least and it's not exactly hard to fathom for your standard male. Therein lay the brilliance of Duran's plan and it was certainly a plan. Can you name other fights where he performed such actions?

Dundee and co were trying to get Leonard to box but he kept ignoring their advice and doing as he pleased.

Of course this takes little away from the amazing performance Duran put forth that night.

There's a good article about the fight in Ring -

For me, Carlos Monzon. His pro record was 89-3-9, 61 KO's. Many will complain about the quality of his opponents but you can only fight what is put in front of you, not everybody is a Muhammad Ali, Monzon allowed the promoters to promote, it was a job not a circus show. Tom Boggs and Tony Mundine, two Monzon victims were really 175 lb fighters.

Lemieux hits harder than half that list. If he could box as well as he hit ...

While I'm not particularly a Dick Tiger fan, he belongs on this thread.

I wish Tommy Hearns would have stayed at middleweight more in those 1987 years and not moved around so much going for those extra titles all over and weakening himself. As Steward said the title wins were consolation prizes because Hagler was fighting Ray, but Tommy getting solid at 160 would have been better. But the Roldan fight sort of showed he was slipping a little bit in skill. His experience showed but his skills slipped almost like Jones against Tarver 2.

Cerdan? I'd say he was a good puncher but nothing extraordinary.

Cerdan was Great, one of the best defensive fighter and hard puncher. Jake couldn't beat him, if he didn't fall on his arm. Tony Zale would KO Jake within 4 rd. IMOP That would be a dream fight.

    Whilst Zale was champ Lamotta was ;
    No6 in1942
    No1 in1943
    No2 in1944
    No3 in1945
    No1 in 1946
So, tell me why did Zale not fight him?
    In 45
    Holman Williams was no1
    Charley Burley was no2
    Lamotta was no3,
Zale didn't fight any of them
    In 46
    Lamotta was no 1
    Burley was no2
    Graziano was no3
    Who did Zale pick?
    No 3 Graziano.
