You're right, he was pretty good for a 23 year old, which is precisely why Floyd chose to turn him from 154 Canelo into 152 Drainelo.
Due to the hyperbolic nature of the loons on this site recently irrationally denigrating the resumes and skillsets of Canelo Alvarez and Anthony Joshua, combined with me being a fair and balanced logical person. It's been causing me to feel the need to come to their defense, and as a long time hater of both of them..... This content is protected
But would he have the resume with a dozen losses on his record ? 0-2 vs Golovkin a 3rd fight doesn't happen with fair judging, destroyed by an old Mayweather, schooled by Bivol, very fortunate vs Lara, Trout. Yeah Canelo has fought better opposition overall, but with fair judging his so called best wins would plummet. I've never seen another so called top P4P fighter need so much help with the judges.
Yeah, he'd have bounced back from his loss to Golovkin, just like he bounced back from his loss to Bivol. Canelo is far too marketable and far too talented to toss aside that easily, and unlike American and European fanbases, the Mexican fanbase stays pretty loyal and don't sweat the losses too much.
I respect the skills of Canelo but as I said I've never seen another so called top P4P fighter have so much in his favour regarding judges, so for me he drops down a notch because of that. I do agree though that Canelo has fought way better opposition than Crawford, I still think Crawford's resume for an apparent P4P number 1 fighter is the worst ever, apart from Shane Mosley who atleast had a win over a prime ODLH.
He and his team stupidly offered it and Leonard Ellerbe called their bluff as he referred to them in his own words “when you an idiot for a manager”.
They offered it because it didn't matter. Canelo made 152 comfortably and, though severly outmatched, never looked any more fatigued than he usually does. Floyd should have just beaten him up at 154, but you know he wasn't going to turn down any sort of advantage.
"comfortably"? Don't be ridiculous. Canelo was starving himself during fight week, was skin and bones at the weigh-in. There was nothing comfortable about that weight cut. To suggest it didn't matter or he made 152 comfortably is absurd. It affected Canelo significantly. Floyd obviously was terrified of fighting Canelo at 154 because he knew how much of a problem Canelo was. He refused to fight Canelo straight up, he demanded catchweights after chastising Pacquiao for draining Cotto. Who knows what would have happened if they fought at 154, but it definitely wouldn't have been as easy for him to win than it was with the catchweight.
I'm sorry; I just think that Bub Crawford is more "killer" than Austin Trout or Erislandy Lara. You're holding losing 3-4 rounds against Crawford in 12 round fights when Canelo might have 5 actual losses if he didn't have the judges in his pocket. How does that make sense? Crawford knocks people out when they test him; Canelo survives and gets gift-wrapped decisions. Fighters aren't great because they win every single round; the great fighters adapt, take away their opponents strengths, and then impose their will. I think that Crawford will always respond to his opponent's level. It would take a great fighter to beat him. Is Canelo that? I think that he's very good. Slightly better than everyone else he's fought except 36 year old Floyd and GGG. Crawford is somewhere between those two and everyone else Canelo has fought. Would that be enough? I don't know. Canelo is a pretty big boy now, so the discussion probably moot. The Canelo that fought at 154 loses to him, though, IMO. ... But somebody called that Mayweather fight a draw, so you never really know...
I don't understand the need to put down Crawford he just had a great performance and it's funny watching people dig up all these excuses now especially when Spence didn't make any of his own how come the car accident didn't affect him for the other fights he's had since
What evidence do you have that Canelo was drained? Did he look bad at the weigh in? Did he have trouble with his rehydration? Did his reflexes or stamina look dulled to you? Did he say anything about it after the fight? Canelo offered no excuses. Floyd schooled him so badly that Canelo emerged from the fight equipped with a shoulder roll. LOL Two pounds changes nothing. If anything, the more focused training made him a more persistent threat, as he remained energized and alert throughout. He didn't fight a bad fight. It would've gotten real ugly if he'd gotten as fatigued as he normally does.
