2000-09-09 Marco Antonio Barrera UD12 Jose Luis Valbuena (WBO Super Bantamweight Title)
    Round 1: 9:10*
    Round 2: 10:9
    Round 3: 9:10
    Round 4: 10:9*
    Round 5: 10:9*
    Round 6: 10:9
    Round 7: 10:9*
    Round 8: 10:9*
    Round 9: 9:10
    Round 10: 10:9
    Round 11: 10:9*
    Round 12: 9:10*
    Final Score: 116:112 Barrera

Very interesting fight. It was just two fights before Barrera's fight with Hamed and I think Valbuena might've been chosed as an opponent to test Barrera against somewhat similar style.
Valbuena was very tricky and awkward. Chin high in the air, but was very effective at pulling back or closing range for defensive purposes. Defensive techniques quite typical to Ingle-gym fighters from that era, Hamed included.
I don't think many people thought - after this performance - that Barrera could beat Hamed. Valbuena really threw him off and was in there with him all the way. Majority of rounds Barrera won only in the last 10-15 seconds.

Valbuena was quality fighter as well, beat quite a few future and former contenders and only lost to former and future champions - his countryman Yober Ortega early on and then 3 of the best Super Bantamweights of his era. Barrera, Israel Vazquez and Celestino Caballero.

Eamonn Magee v Jon Thaxton (Commonwealth jr. welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Thaxton
    Round 3: 10-8 Magee (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Thaxton
    Round 5: 10-9 Magee
    Round 6: Magee stops Thaxton

Total through 5 completed rounds: 48-47 Magee (Official scores not known)

I had read about this somewhere and felt the need to check it out, and was very glad I did. Terrific domestic contest that would have you wishing you were there in the atmosphere. Thaxton really gave it a go, forcing the fight and working the body, but I've got to say about Magee, that he is a counter-punching specialist. Every time Thaxton got close it was like he was running a gauntlet with the possibility of getting caught with one of those sharp and accurate counters. Finally, it did happen in the 6th when Magee caught Jon with a perfect left hook counter. I counted app. 25 unanswered punches on Magee's followup and Coyle's stoppage was quite right. Again, if you want to enjoy a good domestic dust-up, go no further.

Magee is one of my favorite British fighters of the early 2000s. Shea Neary fight in particular, was brilliant. Domestic fire-fight with a lively Belfast crowd.
If you feel like watching some mroe of Eamonn - and didn't see that one yet - that's the one I'd recommend.

Saw it, loved it and had it right down to the wire. This is what I wrote when I scored it about a year ago:

Eamonn Magee v Shea Neary (for Magee's Commonwealth jr. welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Magee
    Round 3: 10-9 Neary
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Magee
    Round 6: 10-9 Neary
    Round 7: 10-9 Neary
    Round 8: 10-9 Neary
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Neary
    Round 11: 10-9 Magee
    Round 12: 10-9 Magee

Total: 116-115 Neary (actual score: referee sole arbiter - 116-114 Magee)

Although I had it close, it just never felt like Magee did enough in this fight. He was a beautiful counter-puncher, but outside of the 2nd round when he momentarily stunned Neary and the last round, he never made an attempt to force this fight. It was a good old-fashioned domestic bout but I just felt Neary did the real fighting in this contest.

We agreed on Magee vs Neary - and here's one I scored today, which We saw a bit different:

2000-10-07 Paulie Ayala UD12 Johnny Tapia II (Featherweight)
    Round 1: 9:10
    Round 2: 10:9
    Round 3: 10:9
    Round 4: 10:9
    Round 5: 9:10*
    Round 6: 10:9*
    Round 7: 9:10*
    Round 8: 10:9
    Round 9: 10:9
    Round 10: 10:9
    Round 11: 9:10*
    Round 12: 10:9
    Final Score: 116:112 Ayala

Good fight - but I felt that Ayala's superior defence was big difference here.
Tapia hurt him with left hook in round 1 and had couple good middle rounds when Ayala slowed down a bit - but when Paulie was going on offence and matching Tapia's output, He was landing cleaner and getting better of every exchange - the way I saw it.
I agreed with judges's call on that one - and the Bobby Czyz with Steve Albert were certainly team Tapia in there, hah.

I like Paulie's defence a lot. It's not typical guard, but more active way of blocking punches. A bit like in Glen Johnson.
It's probably also the reason He was in so many controversial fights. Some people appreciate that defensive style more than others.

I wanted to see a little more of the Magee counter-punching style and alighted on this. This was Hatton during his WBU championship days.

    Ricky Hatton v Eamonn Magee

    Round 1: 10-8 Magee (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 4: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 5: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 6: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Magee
    Round 11: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 12: 10-9 Magee

Total: 116-114 Hatton (actual scores: 115-112, 116-111 and another 116-111 all for Hatton)

Totally enjoyed this contest and it showed that Magee was indeed world class with the performance and tussle he gave Hatton. Like the Neary fight, I feel Magee could have done a bit more for his game if he was a bit more aggressive rather than sitting back in his counter-punching role, but still a damn good performance. I did feel referee Mickey Vann was a bit heavy-handed with Magee at times, especially when he interrupted him in the 2nd after stunning Hatton. But all around a good fight.

    Roberto Duran vs Davey Moore

Round 1; Moore, 1st round could've went either way but I feel like the last minute action was handeled better by moore, he looked to be more accurate and his uppercuts had good snap in them I think

Round 2; Duran, duran got the better out of this round even though moore kept throwing back, even staggered duran in the last five seconds

Round 3; Moore, real though round, duran took a bigger beating in my eyes so this one goes to moore

Round 4; Moore, this fight has been a great scrap, the round looked better for moore once again

Round 5; Moore, duran is landing good body shots and is a real experienced fighter, but he just can't help getting hit hard by moore's jabs

Round 6; Duran, I think that duran finally snatched a round for himself, great head movement and oveheand countering by him

Round 7; Duran, (moore down) looks like duran got his second wind and moore got winded, plus the eye cut

Round 8; Duran wins, he is too ****ing brutal, I love him

2000-10-14 Manny Pacquiao TKO10 Nedal Hussein (Super Bantamweight)
    Round 1: 10:9*
    Round 2: 9:10*
    Round 3: 10:9
Round 4: 8:9 (Pacquiao down, Hussein lost a point)
    Round 5: 10:9
    Round 6: 9:10
    Round 7: 10:9
    Round 8: 9:10*
    Round 9: 10:9
Final Score (At the time of the stoppage): 85:84 Pacquiao

I think I saw it before, but I forgot what a great fight it was.
Interesting to see Pacquiao at this stage. He already was spectacular athlethe, with speed, power and ability to stay on offence very long, with those sustained double-fisted attacks - but He was still raw, more of a swinger and looked very volnurable defensively.
Hussein came out to fight, had crafty defence for a fighter who's more of a brawler. Round 4 knock-down with a jab was a shocker, but He was competitive all the way, catching Pacquiao with right hand regulary.

The stoppage was a bit controversial as well. The cut didn't look that bad and it was quick call from ringside doctor - and while it looked like Pacquiao was coming on strong, it's unfortunete Nedal wasn't given a chance to finish the fight and give it a go late.

Stevic, I had it a bit more one-sided in the score, but noted that it was competitive all the way. This is what I wrote:

    Roberto Duran v Davey Moore

It's funny, but I have never seen this fight in its entirety before. I've always seen highlights on the fight from day 1, but for some reason, never started it at the beginning, which I am now rectifying.

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Duran
    Round 3: 10-9 Duran
    Round 4: 10-9 Duran
    Round 5: 10-9 Duran
    Round 6: 10-9 Duran
    Round 7: 10-8 Duran (scores a knockdown)
    Round 8: Duran stops Moore

Total: 70-63 Duran (actual scores: 70-65, 70-65 and 70-64 all for Duran)

He may have been slower than his lightweight and welterweight days, but Duran's viciousness remained. Man, you do not want to give this guy the taste of blood like he had in the 8th. Despite this, Moore got in his licks as it was a well-matched bout stylistically, but Duran was not to be denied. One last thing, shame on Moore's corner for not pulling him out of there in the 8th. I kept waiting to see a towel floating in. The ref as well was poor. He made no effort in stopping it until he saw the doctor get up on the apron. Man, what were they waiting on?!

Anthony Mundine v Danny Green I

    Round 1: 10-9 Green
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Green
    Round 4: 10-9 Green
    Round 5: 10-9 Mundine
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Mundine
    Round 8: 10-9 Mundine
    Round 9: 10-9 Mundine
    Round 10: 10-9 Mundine
    Round 11: 10-9 Green
    Round 12: 10-9 Mundine

Total: 116-114 Mundine (actual scores: 116-113, 118-112 and 118-111 all for Mundine)

Man, the Aussies were up for this fight with the fight crowd divided between their man. A good old-fashioned domestic disagreement. It wouldn't make me forget great domestics like we've seen between Kaylor-Christie or Minter-Finnegan, but it had its moments. The scoring of the fight can be a bit tricky. The announcers just simply got behind Mundine and stayed there. Mundine did nail Green cleanly coming in, but there wasn't a lot of it, whereas Green was constantly barreling in firing everything at Mundine. Maybe not as pretty, but his shots were getting through. When I said the announcers got behind Mundine, it was palpable. Both fighters were slipping on the logo of the canvas. When Mundine slipped, the canvas was wet. When Green slipped, his legs were gone. Moreover, Kostya Tszyu, one of the color boys at the mic had it 119-109 for Mundine and they spoke like it was gospel. It's in the eye of the beholder.

Paul Gonzalez v Orlando Canizales I (NABF flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Paul
    Round 2: 10-9 Paul
    Round 3: 10-8 Orlando (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Paul
    Round 5: 10-9 Paul
    Round 6: 10-9 Paul
    Round 7: 10-9 Paul
    Round 8: 10-9 Paul
    Round 9: 10-9 Paul
    Round 10: 10-9 Orlando
    Round 11: 10-9 Paul
    Round 12: 10-9 Paul

Total: 117-110 Paul Gonzalez (actual scores: 117-110, 118-109 and another 118-109 all for Gonzalez)

It really is amazing in boxing how fortunes can change. Gonzalez looked like he was going straight to the top the way he practically whitewashed Orlando Canizales here. And he did it in his 4th pro fight. If you had said then that it was going to be Orlando headed to the world title and a record number of defenses and the Hall of Fame, they'd have been measuring you for a strait-jacket. Boxing's a funny business.

Manny Pacquiao v Nedal Hussein (WBCrap title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Pac
    Round 2: 10-9 Pac
    Round 3: 10-9 Pac
Round 4: 9-8 Hussein (scores a knockdown but is then penalized a point for use of the elbow)
    Round 5: 10-9 Pac
    Round 6: 10-9 Hussein
    Round 7: 10-9 Pac
    Round 8: 10-9 Pac
    Round 9: 10-9 Pac
Round 10: Doctor stops the fight on a cut eye sustained by Hussein

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-82 Pacquiao (actual scores: 87-83, 87-85 and another 87-85 all for Pac)

M, thanks for bringing this one up. Damn good fight. I had it a bit wider for Pac, but Hussein was in every round. Jeff Fenech needed to get ahold of his man and to watch the rough stuff when you're fighting in the other man's hometown. That was a very vocal crowd and he was flaunting a DQ at a number of points in that fight. Carlos Padilla did his usual atrocious job, but surprisingly, for all his leanings Manny's way, he had it closer than I in score. Good fight.
