Ali looked horrific within silent era film as well. No sign of any speed or athleticism. We do know long lists of fighters and experts that praised Jeffries as a fighter. If all we had were expert opinions of Ali’s greatness and 8 minutes of the worst silent film footage we are in the same boat.

Fleischer and Ring rated Johnson number one and Jeffries number two until he passed. Once he passed Ring revised their ratings putting Jeffries as number one. Soon after the entire listing was revised lifting Louis and Ali and Marciano, losing Schmeling and dropping all the old timers into lower top ten status or out completely.

The Ring never ranked Jeffries number one which is what you said .I've been subscribing to the magazine since the early 60's,and at no time was Jeffries ever their number 1 choice.

The difference in filming quality/technology can be compensated for by an informed observer. Unimaginative punch selection, a poor guard, lack of concussive power, and following your physically inferior opponent around by a leash are what is left.

Yeh, Nat Fleischer's horrible ratings don't hold a lot of weight with me, the worst of rose-tinted nostalgia. Corbett was a part-time boxer who had beaten a twice retired sodden alchy 8 and 11 years before his meeting with Jeffries. Other than that he had a fix with McCoy, a beating to the sawed-off wharf brawler Sharkey, getting pulverized by Fitz and a successful defense against the diminutive Mitchell in his final fight. Whoopie!

Fitz was a great undersized fighter who Jeffries beat with size and youth. Great. Amazing. A heavyweight beat a super-middle who was pushing 40. The stuff of legend.

Jeffries is actually a fairly fluid concept.

We don't really know what he was today.

You have Seamus's interpretation of what he was.

You have McVey's interpretation of what he was.

You have my interpretation of what he was.

You have Adam Pollack's interpretation of what he was.

You have Frank Loiterzo's impression of what he was.

Throw in Mendoza's interpretation of what he was, if you want to throw that in.

You have Tracy Callis's interpretation of what he was.

None of these men are idiots.

    Mendoza is a bigoted POS.
Tracy Callis states Jeffries was not a racist though he often used the N word and said he would never take a chance on losing his title to a black man and refused to shake Johnson's hand. That he only came back to reclaim the honor of the White Race, sounds pretty racist to me!
Callis says Jeffries was six feet two and a half inches tall.he was actually six feet even.

Callis says Jeffries was of high moral and ethical standards yet he twice reneged on gambling debts .

Given these facts, how reliable is his opinion?

You're a fine & knowledgeable poster, Janitor, but I can only disagree with your assertion that Mendoza isn't an idiot in the strongest possible terms. He's as good a definition of an idiot as anyone I've ever encountered, virtually or otherwise.

I don’t know about Jeffries, but Johnson with modern training fighting at Cruiserweight could be good. I watched a few of his “prime” rounds in the Ken Burns documentary, way ahead of his time and total defensive genius.

You can’t give him too much credit for beating little Stanley Ketchel, but he literally decided when he wanted to end the fight and knocked him out right there!

Are you going to tell me that my man JJ couldn’t beat 2014-2018 era Marco Huck, Steve Cunningham, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, etc, with modern training??

I just realized I ignored the thread prompt and made my own question. Whoops, have a good day!

He posts on Boxing Scene on the History Forum He has derailed 5 of my recent threads ,inserting a hatred agenda on Jack Johnson into posts about Jeannette and Langford. His recent activities include virulent character assassinations of Johnson,Dempsey,Louis, and more recently Lewis.
