I'm an Ali fan I like him more than Frazier but it is what it is.

Spinks technically going up 45lbs to beat the reigning and undefeated Larry Holmes, in a 15 round fight no less.

Close but Larry was past his prime. Ray and Hearns were closer to their prime.

Schmeling over Louis is up there. Louis destroyed two heavyweight champs already, and wouldn’t lose again until he returned from retirement with a 60-1 record

He was early on soon after the fight was announced. But as I remembered (I'm not that old yet) as the fight approached Hearns was the betting fav. So I did a bit of research. From https://www.nytimes.com/1981/09/16/sports/opinions-and-bets-abound.html

That's how I remembered it. I thought that 7:5 Hearns was a good value to bet on SRL. But I was a youngster and there was no easy online betting in those days. Nevertheless, even with not winning any $, I was pleased that the result validated my risk/reward analysis.

Hearns may have been better than Holmes in 1981, he was certainly better than the 35 year old Holmes by 85.

Fair enough. Thanks for providing so much detail.

As for no easy online betting... I pretty certain there wasn't any online betting in 1981!
