Adversity breeds strength of will. Just like anything it has to be learned and if he hasn't experienced that adversity before then he's never developed that ability to cope with adversity when he suddenly faced with it. I guess Dubois has never had to overcome anything like what he experienced with Joyce and Usyk and when facing defeat instead of just gritting it out until the end chose to quit.
I think it is time someone reminds everyone that we are not in there taking the punches. He "quit" in the Joyce fight because his eye was badly damaged...he did it without style, but it was a good call to save his career. He was taking a frightful beating in there this time. Usyk is not thought of as a big puncher but he punches harder than advertised when you get his temper up (ask Huck and Bellew), he throws a good volume and hits you at angles that are weird even for a southpaw. I think he was just exhausted, hurt and demoralized.
My thinking is that he isn’t pushed in training and sparring. Getting your ass beat or going through adversity in your development result you in having more resolve. And add in that he’s had a strange upbringing. I think he was homeschooled since 13 by his dad, in the hopes of becoming a professional boxer. Most fighters/people, have a life and something that anchors them. With Dubois, I see a guy who’s not a fully fledged person.
Heart or not.. He still deserved to win in round 5 when he landed that bodyshot. Usyk was out cold and couldn't continue.
Some boxers simply shouldn't be fighting, but they do it because there's nothing else out there for them
He just is not world level. He is a fairly decent domestic/European level fighter. In a very real sense there is no shame in that. He is a real pro boxer. I think his stock went up after the Usyk fight. It’s just too bad that no one talks about the European title anymore these days. There are too many bull**** belts these days.
True probably everyone here would quit or not even get in the ring in the first place, which why most here have not boxed. But we have to judge Dubois as a boxer and quitting now twice in fights he lost is not a good look. Quitting comes with a stigma in this sport and that's just how it is as we expect boxers to be warriors. Yes he was injured but Inoue had a fractured orbital socket too, early in his fight with Donaire and hung in there and won. I doubt quitting even crossed Inoue's mind, that's the difference in mindset between the two.
Difference isn’t just mindset, it’s the talent as well. I’m sure Inoue knew he was good enough to win the fight despite the injury. Dubois is good, but he’s not even close to elite and I think it’s clear that he knows it. A bone breaks in his face, but he doesn’t have a well rounded skill set to fall back on. Body shot or low blow aside, he was getting beat up pretty bad by Usyk and it wasn’t going to get any better. All things considered, I don’t think we should bash every single boxer for quitting. Like Catchwt said, we’re not the ones taking the punches.
A good example is Maidana vs Ortiz. Maidana had heart, kept going when Khan hurt him badly with a livershot and nearly stopped him. Also in his fight with Ortiz he was dropped a few times but kept going. Ortiz om the other hand while arguably more talented had a lack of heart. Sure compared to non boxer anyone that goes in the ring has heart but for a boxer he badly lacked it. " to young to get beaten up like this" and it showed troughout his career. This content is protected Its very rare for a guy who quits early in his career and shows a lack of heart to turn into some Ali type warrior later. A guy like Vitali is a rare example. Quit vs Byrd was a warrior after that.
Dubious Daniel has been dropped 6 times in his career and every one has seen him go to one knee.. it's a preset when he's in trouble. Game over
To be fair, he suffered a very serious career-threatening injury early doors against Big Joe Joyce and battled on until the tenth And against Lerena, controversy aside, he managed to stop him despite suffering a serious debilitating knee injury. Against Usyk he took the knee but Usyk puts you under a lot of mental pressure and when your opponent is standing right in front of you and applying constant pressure and you can't hit them anywhere near as often as they're hitting you it's very mentally draining and it makes you very unsure of yourself which will take it's toll on you both mentally and physically during the second half of the fight. Also Dubois couldn't hurt Usyk with anything upstairs when he did land because Usyk has an iron chin and that's something Dubois isn't used to even against fighters his own size or bigger, whereas, conversely, he was feeling Usyk's power when he was getting caught, even by the jab. Obviously he's no Gatti-esque warrior and never will be but he did display heart against Big Joe and Lerena after suffering serious injuries.
