Also, it's so simple, but "Sailor" Tom Sharkey was perfect. The guy was like a literal pulp character come to life. "Little Red" Danny Lopez probably wouldn't fly today, but that one also seemed so fitting. I like Wilder's spin on the old "Brown Bomber" nickname with the "Bronze Bomber". Max Baer besides having a cool name, had some great nicknames with, "The Clown Prince of Boxing", and "Madcap Maxie".
The greatest nickname ever came from a fighter that wasn't even really that good: Matt "The Predator" Vanda. David "Hayemaker" Haye This is an original nickname, it will be difficult to find another boxer with the same nickname. That's why I like this nickname.
I’ve always found “The Orchid Man” highly suggestive of imminent violence and utter destruction. Based on the nickname alone, I imagine Dempsey was quaking in his boots prior to opening bell at Boyles Thirty Acres (There’s an Arnie joke in there somewhere). As it turned out, the girly named “Manassa Mauler” ended up winning the fight. Oh, the irony.
Lol, I'd forgotten about that one. Does anyone know the origin of Carpentier's nickname? It's quite bizarre. Also, I'm rather partial to nicknames that reference where a fighter is from or their former trade. Things like "The Saint Paul Phantom", or "The Fighting Fisherman". It gives a fighter more identity and fans with similar backgrounds will often naturally support them.
I believe he was known to give orchids out to the ladies. I don’t know if Gorgeous Georges tried to give Dempsey one before their fight - I don’t know that Jack would’ve appreciated that gesture!
