I remember that after Williams was knocked out twice by Liston he was unfairly tagged with the reputation of being a world beater until he got hit on the chin with a hard punch.

Damn Wilder might just vaporise Williams. No defence, coming in sloppy with a suspect chin this isn’t a fight - Deontay lines him up early.

But Journeyman92 my friend, Sonny Liston says Hi. Liston had his nose fractured by Cleveland Big Cat Williams.

It's only those with no knowledge of the sport who say Williams chin was bad.

He actually ate a lot of solid punches from Liston before going down. It was a peak Liston as well, and imo nobody in history would've beaten that version of Liston fighting him like Williams did. If Williams chin was so suspect, and his defense non-existent, he wouldn't have lasted even a minute against Liston.

Their were even moments in their first bout, when Liston hit him with some solid punches that would've knocked out lesser fighters, and Williams shook it off and gave better than he got.

Regarding his loss to Satterfield, he was a 20 year old, green, undeveloped last minute substitute, who hurt Satterfield and prematurely went in for the kill.

    Satterfield himself praised Williams chin.

"he's got plenty of heart and that's the big thing. I hit him some real hard punches in the second round and he just came back"

I love the source material. The Miami News writer seems to be offering Satterfield unsolicited advice to lay off the sauce.

A fight where Wilder is losing until he wins. You really have to be able to plant Wilder or avoid the big one, I don't think Cleveland Williams can do that for 12 and Wilder (who I dislike and hate giving him credit for anything) for all intents and purposes appears to be insanely durable and has the ability to clip you hard even when hurt.

I've never understood this notion that Wilder had no chin? I was screaming to the TV rather embarrassingly, "HOW IS HE STILL STANDING" at the insane punishment he was absorbing in the third fight, while remaining on his feet.

Williams according to all common opponents and Liston himself hit harder than Liston but couldn't take it like Liston, nor was nearly as good a fighter, or puncher.

Back in Williams day, the title bouts were a manly 15 round distance, not this corny 12 round limit.

I'll be honest, I don't like Wilder and I hate that he's the American standard bearer at HW. He's crazy durable because he has shown in multiple fights now and not just Fury that he can be losing, can take flush shots, appear to be punch drunk and still walk to you like the boogeyman and ice you. That's a dangerous person.

While I like your post, why in the world do we have to be subjected to watching another Wilder title bout? What did we do to deserve that fate? Wilder is approaching his 40's, it seems that we are into the geriatric generation. Wilder has had his opportunities already, the outcomes in future title bouts will be no different.

You'll get no disagreement from me, I have no desire to see him again :qmeparto:
